Re: What kind of work do you do to finance your sailing?

I'm a writer and I don't make much.
It's about choices. I drive an older vehicle. I'd rather have a slip payment than a car payment and you don't have to have a 2014 50' boat to go sailing.

Re: The trend in new cruising boats....

Unfortunately, we're in an age of "dumb" and "instant gratification". The more simple a system is, the more likely it's going to sell. Nobody wants to start out on the smaller boat and learn. They'd...

Re: The run aground poll

When I was learning how to load mine on the trailer, I did a doozy. I was bringing mine up to the trailer and missed. Instead of throwing her into reverse, I brought her about. The ass end swung...

Re: Re-Decorating/Cushion Covers?

Her style choice isn't really my cup of tea.
But, she's paying for it and it's her boat, dude. And who cares what future owners might think? If they don't like it, they can change it. Fabric choice...

Re: Describe your tyical daysail if you would.

Wow, some people really go all out.

I announce shove off time. Newbies get a brief run down of things at the dock for their safety (don't sit on lines, shut up and watch your head if I say we're...

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

I think it's not going to matter too much for the average single hander. A wheel may be more comfortable. You get pulleys and things to help with the load. But you get a little more feedback with how...

Re: How many women here own their own boat?

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

It's not chauvinism. Usually it's the men who own the boat and who are using it and the women are along for the ride. And should a man pointedly ask the woman about a boat she...

Re: But really, is it sailing, or?

I lubs that video.

IMO, if it's a boat powered by the wind on a sail, it's sailing.

My preference is being down on the water but I wouldn't mind taking a moth out once or twice and I'd crap my...

Re: You DO NOT want to be living on a sailboat during a Hurricane

Knowing what 100+ on my motorcycle feels like, no way in hell am I playing with 200mph winds.

Re: David Crosby's boat for sale

I think you're wrong.
I think there's plenty of meds within the boat. I think I could sniff the seat cushions and get into the proper mindset for that boat.
Must you always overthink things?...

Re: David Crosby's boat for sale

Hmm... I'd have to do a lot of mods to get it to where I can single hand it. I'll think about it.

Re: Near disasterous first sail

Greetings fellow Sunfish sailor who moved to cruisers. :D

I sail single handed a lot. I have some tips for you.

Keep the motor running and in gear when you raise the sail. I don't turn the...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

Hannah sure ruffled some feathers! :laugher

IMO cruising does not mean living aboard. And someone living aboard does not necessarily "cruise". Hell, you can take 3 day "cruises" aboard a ship if...

Re: Things lost in the water

Do they make underwater metal detectors? $$$ Wink wink

My list of donations to Davy Jones is long as well. Long enough that I don't even swear anymore. Just a two fingered (sometimes one...

If you want to get in up to your armpits in it, read this article by a research aerodynamicist.

Re: roller furling v battened main and hank on head sails

Why are people talking about "unless you're racing, there's no need for hank on sails"?

Even the professional racers use roller furlers. So I'm not sure you get that big of a hit on performance...

Re: All is Lost Movie Discussion Thread....SPOILERS

I saw it just yesterday (finally found a local theatre showing it, yay!). I enjoyed it. To me, it seemed like he wasn't proactive about anything. He waited until the SHTF and then reacted which is a...

Re: Ethanol in gasoline questions

The problem is ethanol absorbs much more water than regular gasoline so goes bad much more quickly.
Gas tanks made for the older style fuel often vent to the atmosphere which allows that ethanol...

First, I should make a correction. The mast is about 30 feet and some change per the manuals. I always remember the mast height from the water is 40' and figure the boat from waterline to deck is 5'...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

Also consider that to get a decent job...well, a job that would pay the equivalent to one that a high school grad could get 20-30 years ago, requires a college degree. State school tuition can run up...
