Re: Cracks on deck? C&C

The C&C 99 or anything that sized would be a substantial 'starting' boat.40-50 feet is a LOT more boat on many many levels and would be far more appropriate with some experience under your belt.. by...

Re: Bowsprit sizing question

What ever you use could be 'strengthened' by a dyneema 'bobstay' down a ring in the stem. It would handle the upward pull and put less emphasis on the sprit's own strength.

Re: Why Going Aloft On A Shackle Is A Bad Idea

I suspect the shackle was cut off there to get to the race in time.. The failure appears to be the pin/spring/pull tab assembly that decided to 'disappear'...

We've always tied bowlines and if the...

Re: What is this line?

If a line goes to the end of the boom, that's just a boom support for the times the main is not hoisted. If your adjustable line(s) referred to earlier connects to THAT line then it's just an...

Re: Rub strake for sheets/halyards?

The second ones pictured will probably work better on bright work. The first is a self-sticking thin SS 'tape' probably better suited for gelcoat.

The other thing you can try is to use a turning...

Re: Headsail tack attachment.

If you are using hanked on sails a shackle will be more secure.. But rigging a short bungee 'latch' across the open hooks works well too, and costs little. All you need to do is prevent the tack from...

Re: Advice on selling a Camper Nicholson 49

She looks a beauty.. I've no idea about the current state of the Euro market so couldn't comment in the price.

How recent (or not?) are the pictures? All 5 years old? Have you had 'lookiloos' who...

Re: To worry or not to worry… blisters? (photos)

Agree it's a really bad paint/prep/compatibility issue. Won't 'buff out' but might all come off pretty easy. What about the major divot there?

Bottom is not biggie, but the topsides is kinda...

Re: 1996 Catalina 28 Tall Rig Mast

This is the part I don't get either... something's been lost in translation somewhere, I suspect.

Re: Why aren't these cruisers sailing?

It's true you need more wind to make good speed DDW.. but usually 17 knots on the quarter is enough for most boats.

In many areas our travels are dictated by tidal gates at various narrows and...

Re: Why aren't these cruisers sailing?

Agree... and that's where 'lazy' overrides 'in a hurry'.. esp when probably every one of those boats had roller furling at least on their headsails.. It is often hard to understand.

Re: Tips for installing new tank

Optimistic, methinks.

Don't like the 'point load' of the contact edges, there will be forces applied (wear and tear on adjacent surfaces) and velcro works best with max contact area of the two...

Re: A Dragon in the anchorage

Would really be a bit scary here in BC, where old logging cables, crab traps, heavy kelp and weed these sorts of issues would come up ;) repeatedly.

Re: How much wind to knock down a Tartan 30

With too much sail, bad trim, bad luck and bad helmsmanship I think a 30 knot gust could easily knock you on your beam ends, at least briefly. If your wife is a nervous heelophobe something like that...

Re: 1996 Catalina 28 Tall Rig Mast

The only part I can think of that 'needs' the same section is the deck plate - and that would be something easy to modify or adapt to a slightly different section's shape. As miatapaul indicated, any...
