Re: I'm off! St Martin -> New York

The winds has been gusting strongly here in St. Martin; it was over 20 knots steady just now, I motored into it for two miles to reach my customs & immigration office in Anse Marcel and in a couple...

Re: A Dragon in the anchorage

A couple of clicks with google and it turns out to be a Dragon 2 - Luxury Boat | Vismara Marine (http://www.vismaramarine.it/yacht/dragon-2-2/) and those pictures look like the anchor does come out...

Re: A Dragon in the anchorage

While that wasn't clear in the original post, the pictures do seem to support that. What a novel concept - underwater anchor deployment.

Re: A Dragon in the anchorage

I've seen several boats where the anchoring system is concealed and folds underneath the forward deck, then folds out and over - which explains why the bow stainless is split.

Re: 30 day stay immigration / BVI question

As with so much in the Caribbean - it depends.

If you arrive in the BVI on a boat then you don't need an airline ticket as they will correctly assume that you wish to depart on the boat. Depending...

Re: Who''s living on what??

Ok, here's another liveaboard - I live aboard a 57 foot Jeanneau. Since I am alone aboard most of the time, I have quite a bit of storage, space, and "mod cons" as the British would say.

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

FarCry - even though I have a good feeling for my boat's inertia when approaching a mooring, I've now actually switched to your method. I'll still go from downwind, but with a slight bias to one side...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

The pennant is nice, but getting a private buoy in the BVI is quite difficult for non-belongers and the rental buoys don't lend themselves to attaching private flags onto.

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

Some have something similar. I have the Raymarine remote wireless SmartController and it is waterproof, so one can clip it on and use it to bring the boat back to you once overboard (in theory). I...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

gon2C - I know Giles as well and just mention "Zanshin" to the folks at BVI Yacht Sales and they'll probably tell you stories I don't want to know about!

My first boat, the 43DS, was ex-Sunsail...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

The only book by John Vigor I have is "The seaworthy offshore sailboat" (See my list of books aboard at http://www.sv-zanshin.com/sailingbooks.php if you are interested). I tend to disagree with his...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

gon2C - All of Jeanneaus I've been on, and other boats with wheels where I looked, had a wheel brake as a friction-fitting on the hub; I use it a lot when sailing since the forces on the wheel when...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

I started singlehanded sailing in the BVI years back, on an ex-Sunsail Jeanneau 43DS. This is now my 4th boat and I'm still singlehanding in the Caribbean (this note comes from Deep Bay in Antigua,...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Mark narrowed it down to Antigua - and I just sailed from where the picture was taken to an anchorage right next to Five Island Bay (Deep Bay). So we'll give him honorable mention.

Faster, on the...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Hint 4 - this island is small and uninhabited and just a 4-iron away from the main island, which is much larger and definitely inhabited. The natives speak English.

Hint 3 - Slightly different angle from same position that the first photograph was taken.

fallard - I didn't mean to steal your thunder, sorry! I should add that I did research the locks on the internet and, should Zanshin someday make it to Scotland, I'll get to see them myself.

Re: Drinkingwater while cruising?

I've got a Spectra Newport aboard. It makes about 17 gallons an hour here in the very salty and warm Caribbean waters.

Apart from the survival necessity of having sufficient water aboard, I find...

Re: itinerary tips for shorthanded bareboat out of BVI

That $200 that outbound mentioned is only for people keeping their boat in the BVI, it is a "temporary import" which does not apply to clearing into and out of the BVI with a charter boat. The fees...
