Re: On the market for a new boat - please help

I vote for a mid 80s Newport 30...if you happen to be on the west coast they are in abundance.

Re: Production buckets and the limits

Of course the most important bucket is the cocktail bucket. Mine is white and holds three gallons. I wonder who had the first cocktail bucket to circumnavigate. I bet it was Chichester. But without...

Re: Real Men, Real Sailors "The Essex" The Movie

There is a great documentary on Netflix about the history of Nantucket whaling (I'm too lazy to go look it up) which includes the story of the Essex. It's one hell of a story. It's a good thing we...

Re: Buying my first boat please help

The last three boats I've bought I did so without having a survey done. It's a risk, but in my case the purchase price was low enough that the cost of the survey out weighed the benefit. In other...

Re: Maiden Voyage Trip Report - A 23-hour tour!

He who dies with the best stories, wins. And you've got a good one there. You made it safe and sound, no worse for wear. Well done! Looking back one day you'll say "that first trip was a blast!" :)

Re: Sailing Movies and TV shows

Another one that no one ever seems to mention is the mini-series Sea Wolf with Tim Roth. It's pretty entertaining.

Re: Sailing Movies and TV shows

The Bounty - 1985 with Mel Gipson and Anthony Hopkins is better that the other two...(primarily because there are naked polynesian girls in it).

Re: Buying my first boat please help

You agree on a price "subject to a survey, and sea trials". This way you will have an 'out' if you change your mind. Also any negatives that show up on the survey can be negotiated off the purchase...

Re: When Do You Get Off?

In some ways it seems very easy, and in other ways very hard. If I think pulling the rip-chord will keep me alive, I'll damn well pull it. But losing my boat, my home, and everything I've worked so...

Re: When Do You Get Off?

Fear is a healthy emotion that helps keep us alive, and probably drives most people to find and solve the problem. (I just made that up, but it seems right to me). Didnt that Swan eventually end up...

Re: possible to buy a seaworthy sailboat under $20000 that requires very little fix?

I've been looking very seriously for over 3 years now, I don't think I've ever seen a Tayana 37 for less than the high 20s, and even then you are in for a BIG project. I did see a Valiant 32 in the...

Re: Chucking my propane stove, what to replace it with

I can't comment on availability of alcohol all over the world, but gotta say I love my Origo. I have a Force 10 propane stove/oven in the new boat and am thinking of pulling it for an Origo 6000....

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Now won't these take about 3 years of your $500/mo. budget? Or do we start the $500/month budget AFTER 8k in sails. (I totally made up that 8k number...but should be somewhere around there for your...
