Re: Greenport Summer Slip Marina Recommendations

Regarding smurphny's comment on traffic: Ever get on I-95 East on a Friday in the summer? You can walk faster than you can drive. And I think you will find that slip rates in Connecticut and RI and...

Re: Boat sank at the dock

Re: Greenport Summer Slip Marina Recommendations

I don't know if the other Brewer Yard in Greenport is any cheaper than Sterling Harbor. Back a few years ago, it tended to have more sailors but was not quite as picturesque. It is only 100 yards...

Wireless Wind Instument?

Hi Guys;

Do any of you have any experience with using wireless wind instruments? My old Datamarine is having some serious emotional issues these days, and I fear I may have to replace it soon. But...

Re: Oldest Around, Solo, Non-Stop

I doublehanded in the Newport-Bermuda Race this year and the Raymarine ram died 300 miles from Bermuda. (Hand steering while racing is difficult with only 2 on board.) Granted it was a 17 year old...

Re: Oldest Around, Solo, Non-Stop

Agreed. There is a good reason that 90%+ of the Vendee Globe folks use NKE autopilots. And while they certainly carry spars just in case (think singlehanding in the Southern Ocean in a blow in an...

Re: Oldest Around, Solo, Non-Stop

NKE? Wow. They are used by the Vendee Globe folks and they are pushing their boats I lot harder. I must say I am surprised.

Re: Where to get Class 4D flooded batteries in Miami FL area?

Agree on Atlantic Battery. They are tops. (305) 796-3730. I would not buy elsewhere and I don't.

re: Good marina in Grenada to leave a boat?

Not on a tight budget but not a hedge fund manager either. Sock it to me. (Do I date myself?)

Good marina in Grenada to leave a boat?

Thinking about getting the boat to Grenada and flying in from time to time as a good year round base south (mostly) of the hurricane zone. Any recommendations of where I might rent a slip to leave it...

Re: Advice for Trans Atlantic Crossings

When folks who are concerned about seasickness ask me what to eat when offshore, I always suggest bananas. When asked why? I answer because they taste pretty much the same on the way back up as they...

Synthetic Motor Oil for my Diesel?

I put about 50-60 hours a year on my diesel these days since I did something really, really stupid...getting a job. As the boat is not hauled for the winter, being that I live in Florida, I change...

Re: Need advice for autopilot

Keep plugging at making the Cape Horn work. A buddy has one on his 35' Southern Cross and he can go almost dead down wind with it in only 4 knots apparent. But no weather helm at all is required....

Re: Installing a SSB with a Questas gimballed radar mount

I have my insulator above my backstay mounted radar unit. "Service" for the GTO-15 attachment to the backstay is required almost never. Why take any risks with your radar for no advantage?

Re: Skip Novak on Warps & Drogues

The part that I found so surprising was that he said he would "hove too" or "lie a hull". I always had heard that doing the latter in big weather was a formula for death.
