Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Brent,

I have two steel strap zincs and they have been working fine until now. When I put her in I reused the old zincs. They were in great shape, and I cleaned them up with a grinder first. ...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Mike,

I've had tons of conflicting advice on the zinc primer, and I've read different points of view also. I find it all very frustrating that there is no consensus of opinion.

The Ameron...

Re: Labrador...

That's interesting. But you went most of the way to Baffin, how did you find the conditions? I can see Baffin coast as tough, not a lot of places to tuck in. But much of the Lab coast is a virtual...

Re: Itinerary for tall ships sailing from Baltimore to Philly (June 2015)

Maybe they just anchored where they could to avoid the worst of the storm. Seems things were pretty rough down that way last night.

Re: Boat on the Rocks - Skipper Missing

From this vantage point, knowing what we know, little it is, I would say the boat (or hull anyway) did its job. It got him as close as it could to safety.

She looks like she is still largely...

Re: Labrador...

We normally keep our small boat in Newfoundland where we have a cabin and family as well. Right now she is in Delaware City finishing up a refit (will it EVER be done?)

To return to the Rock, we...

Re: Itinerary for tall ships sailing from Baltimore to Philly (June 2015)

Looks like I'll have to work Thursday, we will just walk down Friday.

I don't think you could pay me to anchor in Essington. And or 6' 6" draft is limiting.

Re: Itinerary for tall ships sailing from Baltimore to Philly (June 2015)

Shes going through the C&D right now.

I had toyed with the idea of sailing up there, but no clue on where to anchor.

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Thanks. Unfortunately (or not) the boat next to my boat was our other boat, and her zincs were fine.

I think I have a few issues, one of which is some contamination on the freshly blasted hull...

Since I can't figure out how to start a new thread on an iPad (iPhone doesn't work at all) I'm gonna paste this question here for ALL steel gurus to comment upon.

Re: Trouble in Rockland, ME

Roger,

Totally off topic, but just now saw your name. We were on the same list serve years ago and you gave us some advice on an alloy boat we almost bought. Once in a while I see a bit about...

Re: Labrador...

St Pierre is just a long overnight passage from Sydney! :devil

Hare Bay is pretty wonderful, the little towns of Francious and Grey River are neat. Need lots of scope.

As to bigger trips,...

Re: The heart of the matter

What is at the heart of the matter for ME is to get the bloody To Do list DONE and cast off.

We have two boats, for silly reasons, either one sufficiently capable. But I've got this darn...

Re: Do 2 micron filters have ANY use?

Slightly different situation, not polishing but feeding a day tank.

What harm in using a 2 micron filter in the feed circuit to a day tank?

Re: Dutchman Boom Brake Installation

I use a Dutchman instead of preventers on our big boat.

I attached the turning blocks to the top of the gunnal through a scupper (remember steel boat). That worked fine. I also ran the adjusting...

Re: How far back do you tow dinghy?

I think there are a lot of variables. We have a Porte Bote, they need to be towed right snub to the transom, bow up. Else wise they WILL torpedo.

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Brent,

Our 33'er is a framed boat and very fair, with no fairing what so ever. It can be done. It's a Brewer Murray 33. My understanding is the builder was a guy in Canada who built about 2...
