When lightning hits, it can 'splinter' as it seeks the fastest route to ground. That is what causes the pinholes. I've heard stories of through hulls being blown right out of the boat also.

I suggested that might be happening - enforcement in Bimini is most certainly not stringent, so I'd suspect it is occurring. Correction - I know it's happening as I know of one boat that did not...

Actually, you do. Although most times, Immigration will let you off on that one in my experience delivering boats through the Bahamas.
