Re: Where is the best cruising in the USA?

For me and my wife, full time live-aboard and cruising should at no time of the year involve cold weather. The Florida Keys was and is our #1 choice......never in recorded history a snowflake or...

Re: Camping in a (trailered) boat

I've done it in a roadside pull-off with a fixed keel Catalina 25. Used a step ladder to get aboard, then pulled the ladder up and stored it in the cockpit at night (Anastazi cliff dwelling style)....

Re: Saving to Buy a Boat, Halfway There!

As an older person, I see another way to look at "instant gratification". Too many of my friends have saved and waited for a major event in their lives, only to have circumstances unexpectidly change...

Re: What are your other passions?

Twenty years ago, by far my main interest was sailing ( lived aboard a Hunter 30 in Marathon Florida). Thought I could limit my shooting sports interest while sailing around Florida and the Bahamas...

Re: Why is this a bad idea?

I mounted a small teak swim platform on each side of the center mounted boarding ladder on my '81 Hunter 30. I had to do some adjusting (cutting and bending) on the stainless steel supports to level...

Re: dingy towing

A dingy should only be towed in no more than 15, or so, knots of wind with seas running no more than 3 to 5 feet. Anything more blustery than that and you risk loosing your dingy if you can't get it...

Re: The Poop (deck) on Camping Toilets!

A properly chemicaled porta potty will not smell. Ive had one on many truck campers, two 21' sailboats, a 23' sailboat, two 25' sailboats, and my present Hunter 23.5. I even take one tent camping....

Re: wave height history in the gulf stream

I'm assuming Miami to Bimini is the goal.
I tried to cross from Miami to Bimini in my '81 Hunter 30 in the winter once, it was so choppy my passenger got deathly sea-sick and we had to turn around...

Re: bury the rails...wait a minute

As others have said too much heel will slow down your boat. But there's always that occasional gust that will put the rail in the water with no danger. I was ancored in Boot Key Harbor, Florida Keys...

Re: creature comforts on a small boat

A friend of mine has a wind generator to run refrigeration. But even shopping bargin catalogs (Sportsman's Guide, etc.) $1000 may be a little short. I've used ice for decades and don't find it is a...

Re: The Chicken or the Eggs?

Starwind was not made by Chrysler. Probably the best boat made by Chrysler was the Barracuda, (a 13' board boat similar to a Sunfish). The Starwinds were only produced in the '80's.

Annother...

Re: The Chicken or the Eggs?

If you can find a nice one a Starwind 223 would be a good way to go. It was one of the first boats to take advantage of the 8'6" trailering regulations. Roomy cabin for a 22' boat and fixed keel with...

Re: The Chicken or the Eggs?

Pick up a copy of Chapmans and study, study, study. A current copy is always a welcome addition to any boat and will help curb your urge to spend money on a future boat.

Re: First Boat 1980 Hunter 33 ?

We lived aboard an '81 Hunter 30 for 5 years in the Florida Keys (same general hull design as the 33). Solidly built boat, enjoys a a romp in heavy weather, capable of good speed, easily...

Re: Key West to Bimini (Direct)?

Our night crossing from Marathon involved a lot of commercial traffic. Watch out for Southwestbound ships to change to a more Westerly course near the South end of Key Largo. Your light watching and...

Re: Lumpy, Bumpy Boat Delivery

Sailpower: No survey or haulout was done prior to the sale, probably due to financial restrictions. When I bought a Hunter 30 for a liveaboard cruiser, I didn't haul out or have a survey done,...

Lumpy, Bumpy Boat Delivery

Last Friday, I was invited to help with a friend's delivery of his recently sold 1979 Hunter 30. On board were myself, my friend, and the new owner and his girlfriend. It was to be a simple 36...

Re: Key West to Bimini (Direct)?

We crossed from Marathon to Bimini in a near windless period in the summer, about 20 years ago. As I recall it was about 115NM and we motorsailed the entire way. It took 15 hours in our '81 Hunter...
