Re: Anyone dive to clean their own bottom?

Just cleaned Laelia's hull for the first time, freediving only. What a blast! I haven't been in a wetsuit in ten years or so, the smell of salt+neoprene+shampoo brought back lots of good memories...

Re: Folding prop

Hum. I thought it was the other way 'round?

Feathering props align the blades to the flow when the shaft isn't spinning; the blades rotate around the prop's radius and such motion is perpendicular...

Re: Anyone dive to clean their own bottom?

I've seen plenty of boats with a DIY version of this thing. Personally, I'm looking forward to diving on my own boat :)

Re: Fuel consumption question

I suspect that krisscross is suggesting that an alternator is always under an electrical load, but that sometimes it's just converted to heat. That's conceivable but implausible. My 55A alternator is...

Re: Tips on selling a left handed propeller.

Boats with V-drives, like mine, often use LH props. You could try advertising on a forum dedicated to such boats or drives, but presumably those people will be looking on ebay/CL as well. What pitch?

Re: Bowline Success

My previous boat had sheets permanently cow-hitched onto jib clews, so I never ever tied a bowline for anything. Now I use it for that purpose only. If you're going to use it, might as well learn the...

Re: tow or not

I'm trying to picture what "hang it on the mast" means here. Like, the concave part of the bow has the end of the mast sticking into it, or something? Kind of terrifying.

Re: Brisk sail! And hair dye in the gelcoat…

Just noticed I had this tab open for a while and haven't looked at it. It was sort of in the middle of a long row of tabs.

Just wanted to add that many of the cleaning products recommended here...

Re: Non active zinc suddenly VERY active.

You need a complete circuit for a battery, like the one formed by your zinc, the seawater, a cathode, and back to the zinc, or else the galvanic current will not flow.

A boat I race on does...

Re: Jib sheets too short, splice on extra line?

What boat is this on? Are you sure they're too short? Could be the intent is that you pull in most of the sail by hand with zero or one wrap before fully wrapping the winch.

Awesome trip and great write-up. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Tethering singlehanded

Well, I did recommend against the orange square thingy. That's because I tried that a few times before springing for an inflatable.

Also consider that many non-inflatable lifejackets are not...

I have no idea what you'd wear in the southern ocean, but inflatable lifejackets with integral harnesses are pretty cheap these days. Do you have a marine consigment store? I got recently got one for...

Re: Time to resurrect the Ferrocement yacht?

Bah, whatever. If boats make you happy, then it's wise to spend money on them, and wise to consider various approaches to acquiring them.

Re: Raise the main sail while still at anchor

This is generally the way I do it, unless I know for sure I'm not going to be sailing for a while and would end up beating up the main too much. Otherwise why not?

Re: Argh! - Charter Hull Scratches

I haven't been as many docks as others on this forum, but none were so high as to cause scratches in that location. However they sometimes had appendages that could conceivably be at such a height....
