Re: Swapping jibs sailing solo with no autopilot

Good advice for a difficult question. I agree with finding the point of sail on which the boat sails most comfortably - perhaps a broad reach. Tie off the tiller and blow the jib, drop the jib and...

Re: Did a dumb thing (reefing line)

Go to a tool store and buy a "grabber" (sorry, don't know the proper name). It is a flexible tube with a two part "pincher" inside. The other end has a push button. Push the button and the...

Re: Tartan 34 vs Catalina 30 - Sailing Character

Both good boats for your intended usages. The Tartan probably has an edge in heavy weather performance. So much has to do with personal taste. For me, I just don't like the feel of the interior of...

Re: Stuffing Box Mystery

There are a lot of tricks tto doing the job correctly. The best tutorial I've found is on Mainsail's "Compass Marine, How To.." series. I've put in the home page so that you can see how many...

Re: New idea for stern thruster in sailing boat

Putting aside the opinions of what size boat to use it on, the basic idea looks great. Very innovative! Takes care of many issues surrounding having a thruster that "lives" in the water.

Re: How Old is Your Boat

12 years old. We bought it 2 years ago, practically brand new. Certainly the newest boat I've ever owned. Wife loves it, I love it. 2004 Catalina 400. Works for me.

Re: 1 rescued, 1 dead, 4 missing in Mobile Bay Regatta

Things were happening pretty fast on "St Somewhere". When they passed the sailboat in question, they were by it in seconds. All of the prior experience when they rounded up was that the boat lost...

Re: Yanmar 4JHE Problems

Still, one rule of thumb is that when you do something to an engine and it dosen't work, go back over what you did. Also check the various tube connections. Recently my nephew changed his filters...

What Rich said makes sense. Also be sure that the filters are on tight enough.

Re: How to get back in after falling overboard solo...

I added a collapsible ladder to my swim step. It unfolds easily from the water. I pull the line at the stern, and then the ladder flips down and opens. It works well at anchor. God help me if I...

Re: May be getting a free Thistle

We sailed "Wee Beastie" as a family when I was a kid. The thistle is a wonderful boat! It is, however, a very technical vessel. Yes, take the boat. However, be very conservative in using it until...

Re: Rudder is stubborn

The above advice is really good. However, I would still send someone over the side. It might just be something jammed in there.

Re: Rudder is stubborn

Did this happen suddenly, or over time? In eithor case, I'd go over the side and check it out - or hire someone to do it.

Re: Recreational Sailboat vs. Tugboat with Barge: Who Has the Right of Way? - See mor

Mark. No, not panic. Sorry that you don't get it. As Jammer points out, you use COLREGS to guide your actions, and yes, sometimes you do get close. Best to not get close, if you have a choice.

Re: Recreational Sailboat vs. Tugboat with Barge: Who Has the Right of Way? - See mor

The rule of gross tonnage is not a COLREGS term. It is a term that states a very real, and very basic truth: If a small sailboat hits, or is hit by, a large commercial vessel, the damage to the...

Re: Anti-fouling paint under the keel

Most yards (at least in my area) give you hang time of an hour or two to coat the bottom of the keel. I know for a fact that it works on Trinidad and Micron 66. boats that I have had with those...

Re: Any Solo Sailors?

About going forward. I have all lines led aft. I think it is safer to be able to handle reefing, dousing and other evolutions from the cockpit. When the seas are rough, going forward is dangerous....
