Check for wear on the halyard where it runs over the sheave. Chances are your halyard is chafing a little every time you raise/lower your main sail.

The packing size is determined by the outer diameter of the shaft and the inner diameter of the stuffing nut. Without knowing these dimensions it is a guessing game.
