Re: Pactor Modem

That Pactor news link, once again, reminds me of how antiquated this whole SSB modem business is. There should be an app for that. Seriously. May require some interfacing hardware from the SSB to...

Re: Keel Bolt Maintenance

I like to see a lot of sealant coming out the side of the nut plates to form almost a dam. I thought the procedure was to torque the nuts only enough to make contact and fill a beveled space in the...

Re: looking for advice on sailing north FL to MA

Usually, as in where? This just isn't always a possibility.

With your draft, you should plan to take advantage of the ICW as much as you can. It's an experience your grandchildren may not have,...

Re: Moving boats to NE US from Caribbean during late winter. Tips suggestions...

I've been on the water here in March. It's brutal. Higher dense wind and bitter cold. There may be the occasional decent day or two, but never enough strung together for a passage. Temps are...

Re: Simple Question-How good is the sailing in the Chesapeake ?

Ask how many Chessy boaters vacation in New England and compare it to how many New England boaters vacation in the Chessy.

Re: Cleating off Furling line?

Horn cleats are probably the most secure, but can't you resort to the deck cleat when necessary?

When fully unfurled, there is little concern. When fully furled, there is little load, so a...

Re: How do you start from nothing?

My kids took sailing classes as gym courses in college. For a small fee they could use the schools boats, when not needed for classes or racing.

You could always liveaboard and attend college,...

Re: Cleating off Furling line?

Not sure exactly what size line and load you require, but Defender has a sale on rope clutches right now. I saw a few I bet would work, for $68 - $75.

Marine Rope Clutches on Sale...

Re: Major Hull damage - Cheoy Lee Ludders

Judging my all the half complete projects I see in yards everywhere, going into the project with time and money doesn't seem to be all it takes.

Re: Major Hull damage - Cheoy Lee Ludders

Free. That's funny. The sails, standing and running rigging, deck and hull repairs, probably a motor and whatever down below are going to cost more in parts than she will be worth. It's a fools...

Re: Major Hull damage - Cheoy Lee Ludders

That's an easy pass. It's worth less than zero. Just go get a free boat.

Re: Best aft master berth on under 50' boat?

I just read your post to my wife. She said "that's what you would do".

I knew that. :)

Re: Snow birding

Straight through time sounds right. Hopping time seems optimistic. At the least, that would be single overnights, which would be unlikely. Even when coastal hopping, I find I don't want to run right...

Re: Snow birding

Unless you have another boat in RI, why would leaving it down south for the summer even be an option?

I've not done it, but I've known several who have made the straight shot, with Bermuda as...

Re: How unsafe would this be for occasional heat?

Got it. However, when you're working aboard, on the hard, do the ABYC rules apply and more than they do in your shed?

Re: 3D Printing

The guys I know that do this can spend hours, sometimes a full day, just tweaking the scan.

This technology is miraculous, but still fairly immature.

You all know they will be able to print...

Re: Quick meals or snacks?

Coffee notes:

I leave coffee in a sealed, insulated carafe and it stays in good shape for many hours. The carafes that you brew into are not good enough.

I also have one of the large pump...

Re: How unsafe would this be for occasional heat?

I have one of those Mr. Heater portables with built in fan and O2 sensor. I don't trust it at all. Puts out serious heat, although, up on the hard I can only get the cabin to about 50 degs in dead...

Re: Sailboat Insurance

The vast majority of hull claims that I'm familiar with, including one weather related claim of my own while I was away, were partial losses. Mostly from impact, some from lightening strikes.
