Re: Delamination: I did this ..any comment?

Was there no gelcoat spider cracking then in the area above... I guess my question is, what caused the delamination? Was it merely a failure of the layup, perhaps from stress/use.. or was it water...

Re: Finally! A boat-sized computer

SVA - agreed, I also don't like the surface pro heavy screen, and kickstand requirement... leaves me wanting my ultrabook.

On the topic of dedicated 12V monitors... We use a 22" 1080p 12V...

Re: Finally! A boat-sized computer

The entertaining part of most PCs are they use a power supply to convert 120/240 into 12V and 5V rails... The one I posted has an internal power supply. Actually in a business environment, you avoid...

Re: Finally! A boat-sized computer

Micro PCs have been around a while.
Hate to bring it up but the mac "mini" has been around for a real long while.
Dell has been making their business line "mini" for quite a while.
Here's the Dell...

Re: Painting Catalina 22 Hull For Racing

Actually given the state of the 1989 Catalina's bottom (it had an ablative paint on it)... I'd bet money they sanded through the original barrier coat.

Re: Lifespan of Fiberglass Boats

I gotta call the exterminator... I think I have polyestermites in my pole barn... I hear if you cut open the gelcoat the polyestermites can infiltrate the core. Good thing my core is all rotted...

Re: Lifespan of Fiberglass Boats

Yep Kriss... all boats 60+ and fiberglass, regardless of layup... will turn to dust instantly. I was there when his boat went poof.

Re: Painting Catalina 22 Hull For Racing

I would respectfully disagree with sailormon6.. Blisters are a problem with nearly every layup of fiberglass... certain period glass boats are MORE prone than others.

My 1982 Catatlina Capri 25...

Re: Painting Catalina 22 Hull For Racing

Barrier coat is also a primer...
Typically you'd do barrier coat on a boat that has been soda-blasted, to make the glass more "waterproof." What you apply on top of the barrier coat is YOUR call.....

Re: Painting Catalina 22 Hull For Racing

I'd just do a smooth epoxy bottom coat, and be done...
the problem you presently have is there is already ablative on it... so you are likely going to need to take the bottom down to gelcoat... best...

Re: *** Marine Battery Use Survey ***

With Newhaul here... Mainesail, anything for you, like others said, you've helped us all... But I too am of little help...
Some reasons...
I use a pull start outboard.
I have a single house deep...

Re: Lifespan of Fiberglass Boats

You are right in assuming that it is kind of a loaded question...

As are most responses "it depends."
A 1980s plastic boat certainly can get many more years out of it. Not unusual to find 40 and...

Re: Greatest fear?

It is that attitude that leads me to believe you will react well to whatever situations are thrown at you. It's an attitude I've heard reflected by many a "seasoned" skipper.

Re: GPS track for mobile apps

Navionics is an inexpensive phone/tablet app that creates shareable tracks with twitter/facebook/email. it's also decent charting. I think the phone version is $10, and the tablet version I think...

Re: West Marine BIG sale on line

I'm really not trying to bust WM, because I use them from time to time... but I was looking at the "40%" off line sale.. and it worked out to be about 10-15% off what I pay elsewhere... STILL a good...

My apologies... I know I had more of a response than the above... but yeah, safety is still an issue, but converting to an internal tank makes sense to me, but I'd want to keep...

Re: How fast is an F18 ?

Reminds me of a Top Gear type challenge... I do believe James May spent some time on a AC-45 doing a similar challenge, except it was Car versus sailboat.

Re: Catalina 27 fire on Elementary

Wow, learn something new every day... I mean I could see the usefulness, if it was a macerator... but honestly given the premium on power (electric)... a pump isn't that big a deal.

Our RV has...

Re: Catalina 27 fire on Elementary

What the hell is an electric toilet?
I'm sorry I've had several RV's, and boats... never had an electric toilet. That's why God made gravity feeds.

Electric water pumps sure.

Now I have to...
