Re: When Do You Reef?

Going to weather, my goal is to adjust the sails and balance to the point that the boat sails herself without the need to have me steer or have the auto-pilot engaged, and probably a little less...

Re: another a sail question

You can attach a line to the Boot ( Tacker) that goes around your furled head sail It doesn't have to be a fixed length allowing you to adjust the height.

It sounds like the OP simply set it up...

Re: what might this be?

It looks more like a mechanical fitting to me? A connection point for a wind vane?

Does that fitting move when you turn your rudder?

Re: Has anyone had or seen this problem ?

Let's hope Denise is right. I would carefully check the bulkhead attachments for the chainplates.

It's very possible that you've got an age or moisture problem and need to tab in new bulkheads....

Re: Need help finding dock space near NY or Philly

You'll probably do better $-wise nearer to Philly than You'll find near NY. There's a few members here who keep their boats near Philly.

In the NY area you could try Lincoln Harbor, they cut...

Re: 2014 Sailing Season

When I purchased Tempest in August '05 in Annapolis and brought her Home to NJ, I think three of us killed enough green heads to place them on the endangered list. So if you've had green head free...

Re: Give AIS a rest

I've never sailed there..and have no personal knowledge, but research for a class I taught told me that the 5 busiest commercial seaports in the world are in China, Singapore and South Korea. When...

Re: Give AIS a rest

The Port Jeff Ferries are pretty easy to see and predict. If I see one coming over from Conn. that would overtake me in the inlet, I'll simply stand off outside and wait for it to clear. Likewise...

Re: Sailing Schools - certificated coures or 'a la carte'???

None that I can think of, unless you think at some point you'd want to instruct for them. With your resume and a willing school owner you could skip the student courses and do the Instructor...

Re: Winches slipping

It's possible..that the springs are in need of replacement. Just to be sure though..you didn't grease the pawls did you? they should only be lightly oiled. The gears get greased.
If grease got...

Re: Give AIS a rest

I would think AIS would make knowing what's going on alot easier and in fact reduce the number of calls needed. If you pick up a target it gives the course, speed and destination.
a quick...

Re: The WTF challenge!

While you're pondering the extraction, I would clean up the work site. Dig out or grind out all that old chaulk and vacuum. You're going to have to do it anyway. Clean the entire perimeter around...

Re: Downwind Sailing

Simply put, it sounds like you were over-powered with too much sail up. The mainsail wants to drive you upwind and you have apply alot of helm ( rudder) to keep your heading downwind. Reefing...

Re: Downwind Sailing

When you get too deep on a broad reach the mainsail will shadow the genoa and it eventually collapses. Wing and wing DDW is not an easy course to hold for any length of time without a whisker pole...
