Re: Ah!quick help. Extender plate under furler?

North - I calculate your rake to be 6 1/2 inches (for a one degree rake). Care to share some of your sailmaker's thoughts on your new jib? What is the LP? And the reasoning behind the low clew? My...

Re: Ah!quick help. Extender plate under furler?

Don't want to sound too obvious but is it possible that they installed the head and backstay backwards? That would explain why one is "too long" and the other "too short" by the same amount?

Re: Torn Main Can I Fix It?

Perhaps I'm not being clear. The "vertical" tear is along the bolt rope seam and the OP should overlap the first repair with the second. (looking like a "T" and not an "L"). If the OP uses the 5oz...

Re: Torn Main Can I Fix It?

Yes, the best of all worlds would be to replace the entire upper panel and then reattaching the head board. That would entail sewing/sail making skills beyond the novice level. I was trying to find...

Re: Tips on air filter cleaning/replacement

... I'll be happy to sell you a replacement filter for $40 and I'll deliver anywhere in the Bay Area. (I swapped out to a K-N filter). ;)

Re: Torn Main Can I Fix It?

Campbic, ouch! Ugly! I estimate this as a do-it-yourself-job-starting-with-no-tools-or-supplies to cost a little over $100 and a bunch of blisters. Getting a sail maker to do it will be a little...

Re: Heritage Spreader Flags

Now Paul, may I remind you that you're the one displaying the Red Ensign and provincial flag in your signature line? And another thing: Where can one buy a decent and proper captain's cap? All the...

Re: Heritage Spreader Flags

Very topical thread with the 4th coming up. We fly our YC burgee, followed by our officer pendants on the Stb flag halyard and the Norwegian Vimple on port. When the nephews come on board,...

Re: Boat won't come up into wind

Drew, was the mast re-stepped when you bought the boat? So, if I understand correctly, your boat has completely neutral helm? Can you induce weather helm by moving the traveler windward of...

Re: Boat won't come up into wind

Sorry about the comment concerning tacking (I thought I read that in one of Jeff’s responses). The discussion on the effects of rake on lee or weather helm is still valid. Out of curiosity, what is...

Re: Boat won't come up into wind

Let’s see if I can remember my rigging formulas correctly. Weather helm is when CE is aft of CB and lee helm is the opposite. Cruising type rigs have a rake in the range of 1 – 2 degrees whereas...

Re: First Accident What Did I Do Wrong?

Christian, you don’t know how many times I have leaned over and quietly ask my boat if she knows if she’s racing or not. She never answers that question, she only tells me when she is sailing well...

Re: Request for Comments: DIY Tether

So that was Londonderry? When they left SF, they were all wearing matchy-matchy purple/blue&black matching foulies. I wonder if they have "dress foulies" and "utlities"? Gives one pause - do you...

Re: Zippered Pocket on Foot of Main Sail??

The fishing line is 400# test (at least for my 34 footer). Lighter weight line, although cheaper, is too stretchy and the sail won’t stay on top of the boom. UV degrades it over time and it will...

Re: Request for Comments: DIY Tether

Smack, what year, leg and name of the Clipper Clip? I got up close and personal with them when they were in SF last April. Even closed out a bar with a couple of the pros off of Londonderry. As I...

Re: Boat won't come up into wind

I have found that a suprising number of boats that have zero rake at all. Instead of doing a little rake adjustment for excessive weather helm, they take all of it out and turn their boats into...

Re: Boat won't come up into wind

The rigger in me says to check the mast rake. Do this by using a plumb bob (or heavy wrench) off of your main halyard and measure the distance from that point on the boom and mast. It should be 5 –...

Re: First Accident What Did I Do Wrong?

Wow, still a raging controversy over vang v. mainsheet and heading up or heading down in puffs. And here, I thought that sailing was easy. A couple of things, you may not choose to use them...

Re: First Accident What Did I Do Wrong?

Pretty much what I tried to write. Vang is the fastest way to depower the mainsail (providing you are using it!) Too many newbees only use the vang as an afterthought so releasing something that...

Re: First Accident What Did I Do Wrong?

You mean a AWA of about 160*, then a significant gust moves the wind forward to about 150* and the boat wants to broach? So your immediate problem is the masthead is momentarily moving faster than...

Re: First Accident What Did I Do Wrong?

Two very important things:

First: You did not have an “accident” (unless of course you had to change your shorts afterwards). Accidents usually mean you exchanged insurance numbers afterwards. ...

Re: O'Day 35 vs Catalina 36

A little counterpoint. Are you sure it is a Mk1.5? I don't recall Catalina making that one. As far as I know they went straight to the full-on sugar scoop in the C36. Douglas "experimented" with...

Re: tacking angles

Dixie, next time you're out take some photos of your rig and sails so i can better visualize things. I had a 150 too, but it had a low clew which I couldn't position my fairlead properly. It was a...
