Re: Tanzer 27...New to Sailing

Kevin,

this the only time you'll thank a friend for giving you a disease!

A 27 footer, IMHO, is a good starter boat if you're looking to cruise. Many say that you are better off starting with...

Re: Draft-constrained marina

We really enjoy our Lancer 25. 30" draft and fairly stiff, trailerable and sleeps 4 easily. Best of all . . . it has an actual head. Bought ours in sail away condition for $2200. Another $1200 for...

Re: Replacing Headliner in Tartan 41 (1974)

Great article in Good Old Boat on this subject this month. Might we worth $5.

Re: Re-bedding Windows on a LF38

795 is a structural silicone (reformulated a few years back to be so) and is what professional glaziers and skylighters use. The best thing to do is search this forum for instructions on how to...

Re: Wing keel in a shallow slip

Our Lancer sports a wide shoal keel but the same relationship. We once anchored along a channel. During the tide change we swung over the shoal and set down. We were in 12" of water! That's 18" deep...

Re: How will nanotechnology improve sailboats and sailing?

OK, so if it pushes water out of the way, will it do so until the boat hits the bottom? You have to think about such things.

Re: Your Favorite U.S. Coastline

This one's for Oyster Man. Penobscot Bay for 9 days. Yeah, I'm jess bein' mean.

So, throw the Maw-g'n on a trailah, and haul the bast'd upta Rockland. Takes 'bout ten owahs ta get he-ah. ...

Re: Ahoy! I'll be mostly just lurking here for a decade or so.

Bildge,

Have you not sailed before? If this is true, start out with something smaller and, well, disposable. In that, I mean the Mac 26 is fine as well as most trailerables. That way if the...

Re: Toerails replaced with "StarBoard"?

Paul,

For what it's worth, I think they did a great job, especially using the non-skid Starboard-AS. The material is UV stabilized and abrasion resistant. It will probably outlast you and me.

Re: Just Introducing Myself

Matt,

Plenty of boats to choose from but what about a price range? When you consider buying, be sure to add mooring, launch, haul and maintenance. Maybe it's already in your plan but it adds up...

Re: Ice Box Rebuild

I don't think so. There are 4 companies that own the rights of distributorship nationally, mine being one of the. I'm planning on a 5 fingered discount. Sheets of aerogel filled glazing are...

Re: First Accident What Did I Do Wrong?

Caberg has a bit of an edge but he follows my train of thought. Do you need classes, years of careful mentoring, thousands of dollars in gadgets, years spent on a sunfish on a lake feeling the boat....

Re: Hello SailNet...

Shane,

take the grand or so that you'll spend on 103 & 104 and put it towards the boat. Let me suggest a trailerable in the 25 foot range. Be sure of a shoal or swing keel for your thin water....

Re: Mast Step Repair

So . . . the tabernacle is pulled up from the cabin? And it's attached by screws going into the fiberglass? I'd be surprised if it ins't thru-bolted into the plate atop the compression post inside...

Re: Flat glass into curved frames Pearson 26

Are we talking glass or plastic here? Plastic (polycarbonate, acrylic) . . . bend away. Don't heat it, just bend it. It's formulated to be cold formed. Glass, even tempered glass has more give...

Re: Convert "wifi only" iPad to backup chartplotter?

Mack,

as a back up I would assume that you don't need all the bells and whistles. Well, maybe one bell and a whistle or two. Consider the cost of all the added gadgetry, then consider an Android...

Re: 19mths till we walk the plank.

Spacey,

I envy you, retiring at such a young age. I have a year or two on you and I won't retire until my 70s, at best. MegaBucks lottery not withstanding.

The question that you ask is too...

Re: Life's Next Adventure

SailtoSea,

Welcome to the ward. Pudding painting at 3:00.

I always give this advice to the newbies, as I was once and not that long ago.

Consider buying a trailer sailor in the 23 foot...

Re: Very n00b questions from a prospective sailor.

Thermo,

I bought a boat, no trailer, no truck, no experience. Sounds moronic, I know, but it was part of a plan, sort of. Bought it in December, took a Sailing and Seamanship class in January,...

Re: Cutting an aluminum boom

I work in the skylight industry. We work with extruded aluminum all day long. A 40 tooth carbide Home Depot blade will work just fine for a couple of cuts. Clamp the boom so its square and tight....

Re: Can I use a differently shaped mast?

Mike,

The strength of a section lies in the location of material, not (necessarily) the weight. Case in point, my company supplies, among other things, two sizes of aluminum rafters. A 6" capable...
