Re: Has anybody towed kayaks behind....

I have towed 2 kayaks with good results. The first is a sit on top, with no hatches or parts that allow water into the sealed hull. If it flips it does not swamp, but drag goes up a lot.

Re: Discount Head Choices...

I think the Johnson and Jabsco are the same head, or at least use the same base. This can be an issue since all the marine head manufactures use a different bolt pattern for the bases, and slighlty...

Re: Best aft master berth on under 50' boat?

The new Jeanneau DS boats aft huge aft cabins with hull ports, even the 44 foot version,
It is not the best use if space on a boat that size, but as long as offshore use is not the goal it...

Re: Guidance with Laser2 Purchase -Please help!-

I sail a laser 2, it is a great boat for 2, and fun for one to sail although a bit of a handful. If it is the newer boat with the spinacker launching set up under the deck and all the gear in good...

Re: Cut out centers of bulkheads: possible?

I think the reason you have not had a response to your initial question is that most sailors would be very reluctant to do this. Most bulkheads are structural, and it would take a fair bit of...

Re: Battens Vs No Battens

You may find that a sailmaker would be a great source of information on this topic. Pick a local loft, there are several in the PNW that focus on cuising sails. They will know the local conditions,...

Re: Tayana 37: Coamings cut off - is this repairable?

This might be too late, but Rich has done the hard work building the forms for the coaming extensions, and the owner of the boat for sale has done the messy job of removing the old rotted ones. If...

Re: Anyone have experience with Force 10 heaters

I have a force 10 heater on a small 30 boat sailboat. It was originaly kerosene, but parts for the burner are very hard to find, and it flared and smelled. I converted it to propane with a kit sold...

Re: Direct sunlight and applying varnish, oil, cetol

I live in the PNW and use cetol, I have never had problems with direct sunlight. If applied within a day I do not sand in between, it is not needed and it has never lifted. It does not look as good...

Re: Idea for safety, 120volt bildge pump

This is another advantage of a 120 v pump, you can run it off shore power at the dock. I once read more recreational boats sink at the dock than at sea. Even with 12v system active, if the leak...

Re: Avon vs Achilles for dinghy?

The avon is hypalon and looks to be in good shape for its age, if kept up they can give decades of service. The oar locks are not great, but better than the Achilles which tend to be flimsy, they...

Re: Seattle Area Boat Painting

I have used Canal boatyard in Ballard and Seaview at Shilshole, both are clean professional places that do a good job, neither are inexpensive.

Re: Hank on conversion to roller? Yes or no

This is a good point, if you have enough crew the sail changes are not an issue, but single or sort handed a jib on a foil is a handful to change out. I like the idea of one all purpose cruising...

Re: Hank on conversion to roller? Yes or no

A good question to ask yourself is how often you change sails out on the water. Because a furled sail must go on a foil the luff is not captured as you raise and lower it. As a result it is hard to...

Re: Jib will not unroll completely

The above advice is good, using a binocular you may be able to see if there is a halyard wrap. If there is no wrap and the halyard length and angle look ok then another issue may be binding of the...

Re: How bad is this bottom issue (photo)

I agree they do not look like blisters, but it is odd that someone went through the trouble to paint over such a rough surface. Prep work is the most imporant part of any painting job, and it was...

Re: Washington State SailNetters: Measles Exposure Risk

Usually parents who choose not to vaccinate their kids get away with it because the majority of kids in the community are vaccinated. This is sometimes referred to as herd immunity, the idea that...

Re: Smooth epoxy base for clear coat finish

If you have let the epoxy cure between coats it is important to get rid of glossy spots, but you need to remove very little epoxy to do so. I have used a green scotch pad with good results, just...

Re: full battens for a monohull cruiser?

My boat is 30 ft, but from the same time period and with the same small main, big masthead jib sail plan.

On your boat a full battened main is nice for controling the sail, adding lazy jacks will...

Re: Jeanneau or Catalina

I have looked at the 379 and 409, and sailed the 409 and have some thoughts about the designs. The plumb bow is most likely more than a style issue, more waterline does increase performance and...

Re: Looking for a village by some water

Croatia would be hard to pass up for a plan like this. Less expensive than many other options in Europe, great sailing, many small towns, Hvar and Vela Luka would be larger towns on the coast to...
