It doesn't necessarily mean you want to hide cash, overseas investing can pay higher dividends many times. Due diligence and diversification are key. Vanguard in the states is a pretty solid...

Certain countries are obligated to report American citizen accounts to big brother and some have it in their constitution (Panama) to tell big brother to fcuk themselves .
