Re: Through Okachobee or the keys?

Brought my boat home from Stuart via the Okeechobee and had it "tipped" to get under the Myacca bridge. It was a very nice trip.

I just didn't have the time to go around. If I did, I certainly...

Re: Composting Head

They're great! The maintenance is so simple, just dump the urine container over the side (or heck, just pee over the side) and dump the soiled compost in a dumpster or in someone's yard. Guess you...

Furling Main Sail suggestions

Time to start looking for a new furling main sail for my Catalina 36 MK II. Curious to see what options are out there today, what is working and what isn't.

Not building a race boat, just looking...

Re: What's the optimum draft for a...

You will find the term "bluewater" problematic. Be more specific about where you intend to travel.

Many say "bluewater" with the Caribbean as the intended cruising grounds. That's far different...

Re: I wonder how hard I'm going to get hammered for this one...

If you watch Distant Shores on AWE, they have sailed a Southerly (47/49) all around the world - it has a swim platform. Looks like a real nice boat and they're show is really nice too.

Re: What's the optimum draft for a...

Very dependent on where you sail. Deep fin keels are standard on the West Coast of the US where where shoal draft is pretty important for Florida and the Bahamas.

Deep fins tend to sail better...

Re: MacGregor 26 vs. ?

Had one and every time we see one, it brings back great memories. It was easy to trailer, easy to sail and required very little wind to get it moving nicely. It was a great fit at the time and...

Re: So this happened here yesterday.

This is the moron that I fear in the fog.

Hopefully he will be sued off the water - that boat says sue the hell out of me!

Larger boat typically means more draft and air draft. Depending on where you intend to sail, these can be quite limiting.

Re: Swan owners technical forum

When doing research, its important to look at support also. I can get any question answered and there's a wealth of projects and DIY articles on the Catalina 36 forum.

The forums are quite active.

Re: Multi-Day Offshores: The Elephant In The Salon

Bring ear plugs so you can sleep! It's amazing how noisy it can be, especially if the boat is really moving and even more so if you are beating.

Smaller passages are much nicer, if you have the...

Re: Jeanneau or Catalina

I would suggest that you look at a Jenneau to see if you can tolerate the interior (IKEA) and tiny cockpit.

Re: 2014 Catalina 445 vs 1998 Oyster 45

Hold on just one minute there! That Oyster appears to have a roller furling main and unsuitable to even leave the dock.

Geez, all these high boats with roller furling mains are simply going to...

Re: Low vs. high freeboard - benefits and drawbacks

Wouldn't the higher volume of the high freeboard boats cause them to bounce around much more for a less comfortable ride? That's how they keep their bow out of the water, there's more volume.

The...

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

How does taxing solve any problem in regards to the rally?

Will increasing the cost to make the sport more inaccessible make anyone safer?

Clearly taxation wouldn't stop...

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

So the answer is taxation? That's pretty disturbing as what's really being said is that we should leave sailing to the wealthy.

It's sad to see this sentiment as it's so against what the spirit...

Re: Take your dock lines or leave them?

Lines on the dock and spares for away. We use a spring line on the dock that we grab with a boat hook and put over the amidship cleat to stop the boat and pull it to the dock. The rest can be...

Re: upraded my 22' for a 30' and now afraid to leave the slip

Put a line across your slip to keep you off the other side. I tied mine from the dock on a middle cleat to the piling between hour boats. It cuts at an angle across the slip and is very effective...

Re: Mutiny at Dawn - Transpac Race 2013

This appears to be an example of what happens when there is a lack of competent leadership. Where there is no leadership, a void is created. How this void is filled can vary wildly.

In this...

Re: Donating my Cal 29 to Charity

Donating to the Sea Scouts would be really nice if they intend to add it to their fleet and not sell it. It would get great use. I see the local Sea Scouts go out constantly here.

There is...
