Re: Running one sail

I'm with Don, you don't need a squall at night before socking a kite becomes problematic. All you need is a freshening breeze, and one that is still below your sail's polars. Even if you let your...

Re: Hunter 27 - A Little Look Please?

What I find interesting is they have twenty five pictures posted and not a single one of the galley or even one looking to the stern of the cabin. Curious. You also know that this boat was...

Re: Flying drones

I got this image of an avalanche control drone dropping cherry bombs on the ridge tops.:)

Perhaps I need to get out more, but I don't think I've ever seen a drone flying in the air. Where is this...

Re: Rigging

My guess that your rigger is in the BVI right about now. Riggers aren’t usually in the business of stepping the mast on daysailers so if one does respond, be prepared to spend more than a couple...

Re: Can anyone give me a valid reason to carry a firearm?

gilgsn, I think you want a cutlass - More nautical and a shorter blade so you can swing it in confined spaces. A harpoon might be handy if one desires a longer range weapon. :D

Re: Sail Tweakers Disease

Dylan, are you starting up some sort AA type 12 step program?

Hello, my name is GeorgeB and I am a string puller. It has been 21 days since I last tweaked a sail…

A couple of years ago I had...

Re: Can anyone give me a valid reason to carry a firearm?

JonEisberg, can you elaborate on the stories you heard where people successfully defended themselves in the Caribbean with a firearm? In my limited experience, I haven’t heard of anything like that...

Re: Mast Inspection Opinions

The basic corrosion here is galvanic, which doesn't necessarily need water to propagate the corrosion process. You do need to mechanically isolate the two metals. I think that the original silicon...

Re: Rigging update and replacement?

Interesting tool, CC. How strong is the grip? I personally use a pair of 6" slip jaw pliers. The down side is it can leave marks on some of the needles. I try not to carry too many specialized...

Re: Rigging update and replacement?

UPAC, that bolt is showing plenty of rust. Based on that one, I’d be inclined to replace all the through bolts. The under deck strut is showing signs of rust and long-term water intrusion. I would...

Re: Placement of new jib winches...

Florida, I'm with Sailorman. You should be able to use the current winch positions while single handing. I also place myself either in front of or on the side of the wheel to grind. What you want...

Re: weight of a keel related to displacement

The Ballast/Displacement ratio is one indicator of stability, but the center of gravity, center of buoyancy Vs heel angle, and total weight are needed for a complete picture. Values range from a low...

Re: Mast Inspection Opinions

I’ve always liked the traditional look of a white painted mast. The couple of mils of paint thickness will protect it from weathering without adding much of anything in weight. I work in the...

Re: Mast Inspection Opinions

Casey, a couple of thoughts. Wasn’t your mast originally anodized? You can check by looking down the inside of the mast and perhaps scratch it to uncover the bare aluminum for comparison. If you...

Re: Sugar scoop transom safety in big seas

So, the “Committee for the Selection of Appropriate Oceangoing Sailboats” has determined that cockpit sole mounted hatches are not acceptable in an oceangoing sailboat. Gentlemen, may you please...

Re: New 1984 oday 26 advice

To generalize, two types of cracks. One is the "spider web" type crack on the surface of the outer gelcoat layer. This is generally cosmetic and can be repaired by using a dremel tool to open up...

Re: This is for everyone who gave the Flyin' Hawaiian a hard time....

??? The Flyin' Hawaiian catamaran was lost (and presumably sunk) about 100 miles off of Monterey. All hands were rescued by the CG, but sadly, the Harley went down with the ship.

Re: New 1984 oday 26 advice

Cappin, what was the nature of the survey report? When was the survey done? Do you have a copy of it? The warning bells for me is the major deformation along the cabin roof and the most likely GRP...

Re: Fabric weight for genoa

Old Eagle, can you see the two sails in person? The reason I ask is the "ripstop Dacron" has me a little puzzled. I raced on a boat that had a super light air #1. It was made of really thin...

Re: The Chicken is on the market

So this Chicken thing has got me a little curious. (Not curious enough to buy Bob’s book however). I cannot find the basic dimensional data on the boat. If I had it I could plug it into a PHRF...
