Re: Learning the right way: advice needed!

I learned how to sail on a Catalina 22 with the same sort of ideas in mind. Cheap to buy. Cheap to own. Small enough to slap your hand when you mess up and give you the sort of education that you're...

Re: Problems when reefing Main Sail

A Catalina 27 will go to weather just fine on a reefed main (assuming it's reefed properly).

Here is me doing it:

Charrob, as others have said,...

Re: Tanker goes out of control on Delaware River

Crazy. Not to fuel the armchair quarterbacking, but that spot is on Chart 12314, just west of Burlington Island, if you're curious. It almost hit the range mark, so it was initially going the right...

Re: Around the world on a 500-buck San Juan 24? He's got guts for sure..

I got frustrated trying to follow Rimas on his DeLorme page, so I made my own page that complies all of his insightful messages. Enjoy:

Re: New York to Cape May ok for beginners?

You can sail all the way from Manasquan to Atlantic City on the inside, but there are like 7 drawbridges, a canal, and a lot of it is narrow winding channels with very shallow water on either side....

Re: Catalina 22 Headsail Selection

This isn't my experience either. I move on just my main. I find that shortening the main helps more with heeling than shortening the jib, and if I'm to the point where I'm only going to have one...

Re: Cam or Clam Cleats, re: Jib sheets

You don't have those on your C22? I thought they were standard equipment, but I didn't really think about it that hard.

That's what I have. I run the sheet through the middle of the legs, then...

re: Anchor rode keeps wrapping around fin keel - can we prevent it?

Do some searching for anchor kellets. I have about 5lbs of lead tied to a piece of paracord. I clip the weights to my rode with a large carabiner, and let them out far enough so that the weight will...

Re: Had the boat two days, two problems already...

I have a furler, and it's ok. I got it second hand, and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Managing the foil when taking the mast up or down is pain, and the sail shape is probably marginally...

Re: Catalina 22 good starter or waste of money

I love my Catalina 22. It's a surprisingly tough little boat, although I think 4' waves would get old real quick and I wouldn't personally try sleeping 5 on mine (unless you're all under 3' tall). I...

Re: Catalina 22 sail on Capri 22

Just an FYI: masthead rigs can still have adjustable backstays and their masts can still bend, it's just different because of the location of the forestay. My Catalina 22 had an adjustable backstay...
