Capri 14.2 or 16.5 - sloop rigged dinghies with no centerboard trunk . In your area, there seem to be a lot if O'day Daysailors, which would be perfect for your needs. Sunfish and Butterflies are...

Or, life is short, buy the boat you want now. I will defer to the residents experts as to recommendations....( you can be a novice and still buy a keelboat)

Re: reefing a dinghy
that is a good question that I didn't ask:o - I would think weather helm would be a bit more pronounced with no jib, but I've not ever heard that that was the case. The jib on these boats is pretty...

reefing a dinghy
Question - I know that it's common (and smart) practice to reef keelboats when winds get up and over 15-20 knots. I was cruising by the lake the other day and this poor guy was turtled in a Sweet 16...

I will defer to you Tropicat, you are way more experienced. I was just recalling my conversation with the Old Salt, who has sailed the globe.

Small (<20') Pocket Cruiser Cat?
I did not realize it was keel weight that enabled my centerboard dinghy to cruise thru tacks like a hot knife thru butter. Something about the centerboard acting as a pivot point comes to mind. ...

Me: hey, catamarans seem cool!
Old Salt: If you like sailing a dump truck.
They don't sail to windward, I am told. It's common to have to motor thru tacks.

centerboard day sailer: raising/lowering sails in stronger winds
I agree with kriskross - to clarify - rig with bow to wind, sheets loose. When you push off, sheet in (you should still be in irons) tight, then either back wind the jib or hold the boom out a bit,...

I'm kinda in the same boat (no pun intended) - have you considered more stable dinghys such as Flying Scot, Mariner, Rhodes 19, or O'Day Daysailer?

I get it, now I'm inspired to make my own ropes, sails, spars, rigging, compass, gps, head and hull. No more consumerism for me.

I agree with jimgo, get your launch plan together in advance, know where you'll push off from for the best point of sail, have the sails up and sheets slack, push off and sheet in.

O'Day DS or Flying Scot?
