I think the expense of titanium itself is the least of the problems of building a boat with it.. It's tough to weld and work hardens.. Mean stuff...

I'm on your side, John.. I close them when I am off the boat for more that a few hours.. Keeping them moving keeps them from getting stuck in the open position too.

I've leant out my boat in this way several times, mostly to my brother. You should, of course, verify this with your insurance company, but hasn't been a problem in my case (Boat US and others)
