Re: Favorite iPad Navigation App..?

For me Paper is the backup. And the iPads and Navionics, if the chart plotter fails, would be my first backup - I know this wasn't your question, but honestly I don't understand all of the objections...

Re: port light gasket material

It doesn't sound to me like you need gaskets at all. When you bed something you are, in effect, making your own gaskets.

FWIW - Silicone is almost always messy, although it works fine. Butyl...

Re: Yanmar 3GMD unburnt fuel/ black smoke/ Exhaust

Wish I could help. Our Yanmar has always smoked black smoke at startup. Maybe yours is just catching up with the times.

See if the smoke goes away when the engine heats, see if you are burning...

Re: Raritan PHII toilets

I have taken the housing apart and rebuilt everything on these PHII heads many more times than I ever wanted to. The problem now is the base as JeffH mentioned. Seaduction, thanks for showing...

Re: Raritan PHII toilets

The pump housing is not the problem. It's the base that has cracks. The pump housing assembly can and has cracked too, but it doesn't include the piston which can also break. They also sell the...

Raritan PHII toilets

I have two of these and thought until this year that I liked them. I have been chasing down leaks on both of them this year and have now realized that both of them have small cracks in underside of...

Re: Bilge pump cutoff delay? Narrow bilge

That might work. Thanks. Still though, I think a delay switch of some kind might be better because even getting to the bottom of the bilge with the float doesn't keep the pump from going off every...

Bilge pump cutoff delay? Narrow bilge

I have a narrow bilge and as a result the float switch is unable to get to the very bottom of the bilge, although the bilge pump hose will. As a result, the bilge pump will pump more frequently...

Re: Challenge the norm

Yes, the world needs the extremes... The savants that create new boundaries that most of us will never test.

When it comes to sailing, if you have a spouse that shares your dreams, it is nice,...

Re: How soon are they out of diapers?

If you wait too long you'll be in diapers. And then, well, it just might be too late.

Re: Bilge cleaner - homemade or cheap substitute

Vinegar probably really does make sense...I use it for toilets and it works, so why not the bilge,

Re: Bilge cleaner - homemade or cheap substitute

I like the denture tablets. That's not one I would have ever imagined. I'll talk to the wife and see if she minds me using a few of hers. (Just kidding honey)

Re: Ablative anti-fouling paint, One coat or ten?

I don't think it's ridiculous and in fact, I think it makes total sense.

Ablative paints will begin to lose adhesion around 15 mils of thickness. Maybe my slow-moving sailboat doesn't ablate at...

Re: Ablative anti-fouling paint, One coat or ten?

Once everything is coated, it's done. That may take two coats, or even three in a few areas. I can see why paint companies routinely suggest 2-3 coats, but I have talked to paint company...

Re: Bilge cleaner - homemade or cheap substitute

Hey, great suggestions. Problem is I'm in Gibraltar, and not sure I can find that stuff. I have used simple green as a cleaner for other things, and it would probably be great for the bilge too,but I...

Bilge cleaner - homemade or cheap substitute

What is the best way to clean the bilge without paying the "for marine use" premium? This stuff is expensive. It can't be rocket science.

re: Yanmar 4jhte - symptoms of mixing elbow?

Try Osco....they make mixing elbows and design them for Yanmar engines. Not particularly expensive.

Re: Cyprus marina choices

For the record, the marina prices and the entrance fee convinced me Cyrus was not worth it. We ended up going straight to Herzliya Marina, the largest in Israel.

We instead docked right outside...
