Re: Recommend a decent Hand Salve?

In my day job I am a nurse, so washing my hands sometimes dozens of times a day can't be avoided. My hands dry out when I'm not on the boat, but seem even worse when I am. I keep a box of exam gloves...

Recommend a decent Hand Salve?

With the weather cooling, it's time for me to tackle maintenance that I've been putting off. A day working on the boat leaves my hands thrashed, cracked, bloody, and sore. Looking for some...

Re: Around the world on a 500-buck San Juan 24? He's got guts for sure..

I think, with his lack of an outboard, and his lack of anything that would translate to actual sailing experience, he's simply too embarrassed to ask for the help it would take to land at...

Re: Around the world on a 500-buck San Juan 24? He's got guts for sure..

According to his Facebook feed, he had 75 days worth of food, 85 days ago. He skipped Hawaii, and is now skipping Kiribati, on his way to....some point South? His plan when he left NorCal was to...

Re: Impeller Replacement 1976 Evinrude 6hp

Am I right in assuming that I will first drain the oil using the plug in the lower unit. Then I'll tip the motor upside down to remove the bolts holding it on? I've never done this type of...

Impeller Replacement 1976 Evinrude 6hp

I've decided I'm going to keep the old Evinrude that came with my boat. Since it isn't my primary engine, I can work on it when I have the time to do so. The last time I started it I did not see any...

My longest sail batten broke....

Went sailing today in moderate winds (10-12 knots). Had a light sail and nothing broke, and nothing appeared to be stressed to anything beyond normal. Until I got back to the slip. While securing the...

Re: Installing Stereo in my H23

I just spent three days on my boat with my wife and kids. Sailed Saturday and Sunday. I'm usually onboard mid-week to avoid the crowds. I think you may have me confused with another boat...

Re: Mercury 4hp four stroke first use report oil overheat.

Sometimes things get lost in translation. If I understood it properly, you remove the prop and tape over the water inlet on the bottom of the shaft? Really, who is going to do that after every use?...

Re: Mercury 4hp four stroke first use report oil overheat.

I did just that. Ran it til' it died using up the little bit of gas that was left in the tank. I figure that it's flushed as well as it can be...

Re: Mercury 4hp four stroke first use report oil overheat.

I just ran out and bought a quart, and I'll top it off.

Now, to flushing the motor. Seems I need a "flushing attachment" that, to my dismay, did not come with the motor.

Re: Mercury 4hp four stroke first use report oil overheat.

This, I will do religiously...

The manual states 10W-30 for "general purpose" oil, but that 25W-40 can be used if it is "preferred". I live in SoCal so I don't need to worry about cold weather. Do...

Re: Mercury 4hp four stroke first use report oil overheat.

As it was new, I was monitoring the engine the entire time. It never got overly hot, as I touched it several times right before it stalled. The pee hole shot a constant stream the whole time as well....

Re: Installing Stereo in my H23

I have a bookshelf unit velcro'd to the wall above my settee. It's got a radio, CD, and iPod port. At anchor it's more than enough. At sea it's enough for some background music.

Re: dinghy motor lifts

Not long ago I saw a setup that I wish I would have photographed. It was on a boat owned by an elderly woman. She designed the lift around a heavy duty jack, like an old Smittybilt Trail Jack I had...

Re: Mercury 4hp four stroke first use report oil overheat.

In hindsight I'd say I was closer to 50% WOT than I was to 75%. WNL = Within Normal Limits. That said, when I checked the oil today, it was just below the midpoint on the dipstick, well WNL.

One...

Mercury 4hp four stroke first use report oil overheat.

My slip lies about 3 miles from open water. This weekend I had a chance to use my brand new outboard for the first time. Checked the oil, good to go. I was using the internal tank, and I had three...

Re: Best place in California to sail and live on your boat?

If you want to live aboard in SoCal, your only real choice is San Pedro/Wilmington, like socal25 said, unless you have a couple of years to kill waiting for a live aboard slip in a city marina. Even...

Re: Best Outboard for 24 San Juan

My father had a 1974 Chevy K5 Blazer that ran off of propane. It had a 40 gallon tank behind the rear seats. It was a fairly common setup during the 1970's gas crisis. No modifications were needed,...

Re: Best Outboard for 24 San Juan

Sounds about right for a 25" long shaft. Buying new avoids the problems that can come with buying used.
