You usually see them on the lifelines up forward...

You usually see them on the lifelines up forward to assist where the genoa passes over the lifelines, not on the shrouds.
Cant personally attest to whether they work or not but I see them all lot...

Shouldn't be a problem, I have stored mine that way for years. I like to put a third sawhorse under the middle to keep the mast from bowing.

I'm with jimq26. Bought a cheap kitchen countdown timer, velcro it to the pedestal. It counts down from whatever you preset (I use 5 minutes) and if it goes over the side, I'm out $5.00
