Re: Lake Ontario - Canadian winter storage locations? (Near Toronto)
Oh, this thread is back from the dead.
Thanks for the tip. I ended up at Uli's Yard for the 2011-2012 winter so your suggestion is a good one for people that find this thread in the future.

ooooh! Shock from the pool! Yes, I have that. I also have some other bio-killers for the pool too. Maybe I should do that now before end of season.

Re: Bleached water tank, still stinks!
Steve,
We've fought the same issue for the past 2 summers. Only our tank is fibreglass and most of it unreachable. We brought ours back to a non-potable, but usable state with many flushes, javex...

Re: Propeller Drag - Challenging my intuition
Hey Simon, I had to look that one up. Another great idea.
I'll have to see if that is even usable with my boat. The prop must spin through a cut-out between the keel and rudder so often other...

Re: Propeller Drag - Challenging my intuition
Yup, that's the plan as per post #27.
Will need to couple it with the idea above for an inspection hatch since I can't actually see it without ripping out the cockpit floor.

Re: Propeller Drag - Challenging my intuition
I think we've firmly answered the question about drag so I don't mind if the conversation swings toward recommended options.
I have a Hurth transmission (HBW-50 2R). I don't know anything about...

For what it's worth, your story the other day made me laugh out loud while I was sitting in a room by myself. :p I hope you took my comment above in good spirits as I intended.:o

Hmmm... Do you have a JJ Taylor or Jeremy Rogers Contessa? Mine is JJ Taylor #312 (1983). It has the cockpit divided into 2 sections, aft of the cockpit drains is solid/fixed. Forward of the...

Re: Propeller Drag - Challenging my intuition
After reading a number of aeroplane related threads, it looks like there is a dependency on the pitch of the prop as well as the drag of the shaft.
For example, with a hypothetical pitch of a...

Re: Propeller Drag - Challenging my intuition
Fair enough. I'm willing to be convinced by science and experimentation.
What about my case of 2-blade prop that can align with my full keel?
I think the folding-prop case is a no-brainer...

Re: Propeller Drag - Challenging my intuition
That is a valid point. Yanmar seems to think that locking the prop causes more damage. Yet, I figure, rotating a bunch of metal at uncontrolled RPM for long periods of time is likely to damage more...

Re: Propeller Drag - Challenging my intuition
I'm not convinced the wheel analogy is apropos since the 'drag' caused by a locked wheel is high because of friction.
Another point I read in a link was that if you have a folding prop (I don't)...

Re: Propeller Drag - Challenging my intuition
arf145, remember, when they are "pushed out of the way", they are actually displacing water horizontally. It's not like they are being moved into a vacuum.
One added wrinkle, is that I have a...

Re: Propeller Drag - Challenging my intuition
If you've ever fished with a spinning lure on the end of your line you'll notice the significant force that it takes to drag that lure through the water. You can feel the reduction in drag...

Hi Steven,
I get it. You've got the drive to learn to sail and don't want to mess around on these weekend leisure cruises. Best way to learn and learn fast is through racing.
There are some...

Re: Whats the reason for the huge differences in displacements in similar sized boats
Getting back to your original question, lets try that by analogy too.
Take two identical juice glasses, cylindrical in shape. You put a handful of gravel in one, and nothing in the other. One...

Re: Whats the reason for the huge differences in displacements in similar sized boats
I'll take a crack at it from a different angle.
The misunderstanding is that a sunk mass of weight can displace as little water as it can based on its density, but boats do not sink. They float....
