Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

Mick:

We've been planning to get to Salt Creek for three months now -- sorry that we probably missed you. Glad to hear you are in the water and racing. I've been re-building sextants, learning...

Re: Full or fin keel?

Bob:

Thanks for the reply and photo of Sliver's floors. Looked up "the Sliver Project" on the web ... OUTSTANDING.

Nice to read of your love of Wm. Garden. I checked his books out of the...

Re: Full or fin keel?

Still going,eh?

Seems to me that one of the design problems with modern beamy hulls equipped with high aspect ratio and deep fins, and the resulting high bending stresses at the foil to hullbottom...

Re: Rainwater Catchment.......

On Orion we have screened drains in the deck at it's lowest point, P&S, which lead below to a two-way valve. One way drains the deck water to the cockpit and out, the other way to a hose which can...

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

Jeff:

Post 115 was from Popeye21 and his boat looks like it does have a "Brewster Bite" configuration which you refer to as 'standard practice' if I read you right. Our modification to Orion is...

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

Wow, Talisman! Major surgery ... and nicely done.

A bit of an update on Orion: The hawsepipes work beautifully. I scored a pair of 66lb Lewmar 'Bruce' anchors for $100 each from Defender and...

Re: Full or fin keel?

Outbound:

If you'd really like to dig into the physics of sailboat design, I'd recommend C A Marchaj's 'Sailing Theory and Practice.' The designs have changed, although not as much as some think...

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

Thecrux:

Thanks for the compliment. We also would love to see her derrier from the water. Alas, we are still on the hard. Hope to get wet by the end of the year. (Don't ask which year -- it's...

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

Here are a few more pictures of 'Orion' showing her new transom, aft doghouse, windshield, halyard and other line tail bins, anchor hawsepipes and windlasses.

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

Ok ... I think I have it now ... need the "Go Advanced" option to find the paper clip. Zowie, it worked. This rather old pic shows the new transom and rudder. The aft doghouse is 'photo-shopped'...

The quote about the transom was from me. I do have pictures ... lots of them, but can not figure out how to poast or attach them.

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

On composting toilets and Coast Guard approval. You do NOT need a commercial unit in order for it to be "Coast Guard Approved." As long as there is no discharge overboard there is no applicable...

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

wkeenan78:

You either did not read correctly or did not understand. The hull is not "sucked down" and water does not "get harder." Neither concept has any basis in physics. Read C A Marchaj's...

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

On the holding tank issue -- look into the many threads on the subject, especially the composting threads.

We have tried it and it works. Fantastically well. And you do not have to...

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

Judy:

As to the effect of this sort of design on ease of motion in a seaway I will have to defer to those real sailors with more experience than me. In theory, I would say yes. Because the hull...

Cool Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

Just returned from some work on ORION -- installed hawse pipes and ancjhor rode reel winches. I'd like to post pictures but haven't figured out how to do it.

Judy, are you in San Francisco Bay?...

Re: cutlass bearing

Hate to be a pest, but the proper spelling is 'CutlEss.' It is the name of the guy who invented it. A cutlAss is a type of saber.

With GPS you should be abe torun acourse and see the actual track made good over the bottom. This is far more accurate than trying to estimate VMG by looking at masthead flies, compass headings and...

Re: Starrett-Jenks Morgan45 info-opinions

Most interesting.

Polar Diagrams used to be published with every sailboat review in the old issues of Yachting, Rudder and the like. You do not see them anymore. I wonder why. Perhaps the...
