Re: Flaking the Main Sail

Flaking the sail used to be a struggle and I figured out it was because the sail cover was a tight fit, necessitating folding the sail in too-small folds.

Now I have a new looser sail cover, I...

Re: Bristol 35.5 Offshore and Liveaboard?

I did see a blog where a guy built a bridge deck on an older Bristol, maybe a 32. It seemed reasonably easy to do - some fibreglassing, basically.

Re: Bristol 35.5 Offshore and Liveaboard?

The point that is often missed, concerning the cockpit scuppers, is that the real equation is how the bouyancy of the boat relates to the weight of a cockpit full of water. The 35.5 is a big boat...

Re: 5200 Bond

When they remove an old car windshield, they use a wire. Thread it through, wrap it around a piece of wood on each side of the window, pull it around, cutting the sealant.

Just saying.

Re: Bristol 30 hull ID

On my 31.1 it's on the transom, right at the top.

Suggestion : if you can't find it, get a plate made with the number on, bolt it to the hull, and take a rubbing of it.

Re: Do dock lines go with the boat?

If it's of any interest, I bought some nice pre-spliced docklines from Defender. Two sets actually, one stays on the dock and the other travels with the boat.

Re: Man over board

I have a Lifesling but also a dedicated vang assembly, from Garhauer (only cost about $100). It's in a box, labelled "man overboard tackle", with the rest of the emergency equipment. You attach it to...

Re: Do dock lines go with the boat?

I think it's clear to any reasonable person that the docklines are part of the boat's equipment - even if they get left on the dock when you go sailing.

So it really depends on how far you want to...

Re: Upholstery foam..

I think you are confused... ordinary foam is urethane. Latex is a premium product that is much more expensive. I would have thought that urethane is more likely to promote allergies than latex.

Re: Upholstery foam..

The Foam Factorys best two grades are 2.8 PCF, that's what I've been using.

Re: Upholstery foam..

I used foam from the Foam Factory. For the V berth I used the existing covers, that fit 4" thick foam. I put the highest density and firmest foam, "lux HQ" in (50 lbs) Then I have a 2" thick topper,...

Re: Restart is hard after the winter

I have a lingering doubt over the glowplugs themselves... 20s of heating should be enough to get the engine started. They do have a tendency to age and become less and less effective... if problems...

Re: Raymarine ST40 speed transducer nearly sunk me

Is this the thru-hull that has a flap inside, to prevent most of the water entry while changing the plug?

Small chance this is the issue, but when Airmar changed the thru-hull for my DST800...

Re: Raymarine ST40 speed transducer nearly sunk me

I guess I'm struggling to understand why you can't just look at the thruhull to see if there are any cracks.

Essential items to go in (small) emergency pack

So I bought this Zhik storm pack, which is a pack that goes around your waist. I thought I could wear it when single-handing, and put in a few essential items in case (god forbid) I fell overboard. ...

Re: Universal 5432 Oil Pressure Sending unit

My understanding is that you have to remove the oil pressure switch from the engine, and add a "t" so that switch and sending unit can be connected to the same port on the engine.

Re: how do i bond my mast

I'd just paint the bottom foot of the mast, and the mast base it mates to, with Zinc Chromate primer. Not paste, primer.

My mast and base had had the same treatment 15 years ago, and there was...

Re: Minimal Electronics reqirements and alternatives

SOME of them got there. An awful lot of them ended up dead, smashed on rocks or in storms. Do you know what the loss rate was in the days of the tall ships?

Re: Minimal Electronics reqirements and alternatives

I've been sailing for 2 years with 2 depthfinders. I didn't realise it was so important to have a fishfinder while sailing that I should have a backup as well as a main fishfinder... good grief, I...
