Re: Respect the prop

Yikes! He looks like he's had an argument with an overgrown paper shredder.

Re: Drying Your Food

I suppose ripe fruit would just get soggy and squishy, and might even spoil before being preserved by the brine. Besides, ripe mangoes are very sweet, whereas unripe ones are quite tart, just right...

Re: Drying Your Food

Here's one you might not have heard of: small unripe mangoes just cleaned and left whole. Cover with salt and a (cleaned) heavy stone in a large, clear glass jar. Leave in the sun for a week or so....

Re: Marine Head Suggestions for long term cruising

Aquarian, does that mean you have to install two separate heads (airhead + another for direct discharge)?

re: Cruising may be too safe

Minnesail shows suicidal tendencies. "Maybe i'm crazy", says old sea dog. Keep watching for more details at 10pm.

Re: Broken Spreader Socket

Hi LastMango, I've been watching this post for a week or so, but didn't try to answer as I'm really not qualified for it. However, since no one else has posted, I'll give it a shot. (Caveat emptor:...

Re: Trying to get started Sailing

No such thing as a best area. Just stay in sheltered areas and don't venture out too far until you get the hang of your boat. Stay well away from commercial vessels, and get someone to show you any...

Re: How soon are they out of diapers?

Not diapers, cloth is the way to go. Lots of little sails to bend on :D

We have only locally built dinghies here - lightnings and a curious mongrel design based on the Seabird half-rater [url]Seabird Half Rater - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Instead of being carvel...

Re: Keeping it interesting for the kid

Hi Denise. As I said in my first post, the problem isn't one of safety or our fears. The sailing club won't allow kids below 8 years to sail even Optimists, so that's out of the question for 1 whole...

Keeping it interesting for the kid

Now I don't own a boat, so I have to rely on the sailing club dinghies (1.5 hour commute one way to reach the club too :( ). Also, being quite a newbie, I always stay within the waters I know.

Re: Curse my impulsivity, I'm buying a boat! Taipan 28

NOB - it's great that you feel that the boat checks most of the boxes. There's no perfect boat, and (to use the old cliché) you'd only be letting great stand in the way of good if you let her go.

Re: Stupid question? Sparks when I connect inverter

Sparks even when the switch is off (obviously) show current passing even when the switch is off. Do you have a multimeter? You could check the resistance between the red and black battery clamps with...

Re: First Accident What Did I Do Wrong?

I didn't intend to be elitist or condescending, and I'm sorry if it sounded that way. However, it's obvious that the OP wanted to have a fun day on the water, but ended up with costly damage (and...

Re: First Accident What Did I Do Wrong?

First mistake: you went out solo at the helm without first having gained some experience sailing with others more experienced. Sailing is a lot of fun, but can quickly turn fatal if you don't know...

Re: Crewed for the first time yesterday - wow!

OK, at last a subject I can contribute my expertise to. ;-)

Other than the usual scraped knees, pinched fingers and onomatopoeia of the boom, I had one odd injury this last season. During a race,...

Re: UK sailors missing after sailboat capsizes 1000 miles east of Cape Cod - Capecodo

I had missed the information that the wreck was found inverted with (possibly) her keel missing. That does drastically diminish the survival hopes. Losing your keel suddenly like that is a very...

Re: UK sailors missing after sailboat capsizes 1000 miles east of Cape Cod - Capecodo

Am I being naive when I compare the search & rescue efforts for this yacht with that for the Malaysian airliner?

In the case of the airliner, the probability of finding anyone alive was zero a...

Re: Fraud on the hook

I'm glad to see that most sailors (and most notably Pat Stockwell) are appalled by the behaviour of the Fata Morgana crew.

One would expect Stockwell to draw some grim pleasure from the fate of...
