Re: Team Vestas coming back

They obviously forfeit that leg, and subsequent ones, just like when one loses a mast or whatever. They are basically doing it to finish the legs they can. They know they can't win, but it's...

Re: chart plotter performance without external antenna?

I doubt you'll have any problems. I took my VHF into the bowels of a Hurley 22, stuck it in every corner I could get it into, while shaded under trees on a trailer to test the GPS on the radio and it...

Re: chart plotter performance without external antenna?

I have mine mounted down in the cabin, ceiling mounted near the hatch. Hatch open or closed, I haven't noticed any issues, or noticeable difference in performance.

Re: Winter sailing in Northeast

I would love to, but not really any easy places to keep mine in on the lake, so while I would've loved to be out there, I just don't have an easy way to do it. Definitely jealous, and would've been...

Re: Largest keelboat lauched/hauled by trailer?

Definitely have to agree that the launching part, is going to completely depend on the ramp and depth when doing so. Hauling is incidental, aside from any width restrictions/permits and if you are...

Re: Single-handed tips and tricks

My brother has a habit of trailing a long floating line off the stern (100'ish) when out, as a last-ditch effort in the off chance he falls off. Doesn't work as well if you're got good speed, since...

Re: Excalibur 26 - Resto on a budget

Yeah, I've definitely become attached to it. The plans are to continue to refit the little things, get little things here and there caught up (refinish the teak for example, replace lifelines with...

Re: Excalibur 26 - Resto on a budget

Yes, Todd Lipps has an excellent blog and has helped me with information towards my own project. It was his writings and findings that allowed me to make the decision to take this on myself. What...

Re: Excalibur 26 - Resto on a budget

When they lifted her to put her in the water back in the beginning of the year, there was no wobble to be seen. I'll check again when I lift off the trailer hopefully this weekend. Planning on...

Re: Excalibur 26 - Resto on a budget

So earlier this week, I finally was able to get the boat home. Had a delay at the yard and it was rather nerve-wracking. I'm working 12 hour days, 7 days a week (I'm currently on day 20 straight with...

Re: Setting up for a couple of day off of the grid.

my .02 on it.

You should be fine with a small solar panel, probably even something as low as a 50 watt panel will keep up with you with what you're using. Probably even less. I run the same, nav...

Re: VOLVO OCEAN Race!

With all the media and options on the boats this year, I do hope they do leg documentaries as they have before. As much as I like watching the play-by-play, I do love the full episodes too. I know...

Re: NEW Sailing documentary, movie

That page layout, at least on Chrome and my work 19" monitor at 1280x1024 res, is awfully funky to stare at.

Re: eliminated engine...wheres my negative? jajaja

Got a Hurley 22 in my yard on a trailer if you're bored lol. Definitely looks to be a stout little thing. If nothing else happens with it, we might toss it in the lake next summer for a bit and see...

Re: chartplotter/sonar system for catalina 22

Correct, they won't give you water speed or temperature, just depth (and fishfinding). In my case, I was happy with the GPS speed instead, and if I want to know if the water is cold, I'll stick my...

Re: chartplotter/sonar system for catalina 22

For the first, yes, it's using the GPS to calculate your speed. However, if you want to add things like water temperature, and have a more exact speed constantly (some plotters only update every...

Re: Sorry, you are about to get slammed. First question: bowsprit

It looks like to me, from that picture, that it's basically a 2x12 or so, just painted and stuck on there. I would look into replacing the entire piece, and make sure to seal it properly before...

Re: Why do people still use depth sounders?

I haven't read all, and I'm sure I'm not alone, but in the lake I'm on currently, there is a lot of sediment that can move and accumulate in the inlet from the marina, so without the depth reading on...

I don't use these to actively seek out anyone other than meeting friends with common interests, or that may be nearby to meet up and say hi. I'm sure that things for other people may progress beyond...

Re: Anyone ever sold at a profit?

really depends on the deal. For example, the Hurley 22 that my brother and I picked up, even if you include the cost of the trailer refit to strengthen it, plus the few missing rigging parts, we...
