Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

When I designed FRANCIS I had in mind a nice, all round, good mannered vessel that would perform well in all conditions. If I had thought that in our typical tide rip/chop there would have been some...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

We could easily double the tankage on FRANCIS. There is lots of vacant volume in the boat. We don't need to weld a vice to the deck. There is not much need for welding on Frankie.

I chose SPRAY...

Med:
I just can't do it. It would take a book to carefully go over all the varaiables here. I think it's a mistake to divide the the subject into two groups, i.e. masthead and fractional. There are...

Re: Baby seat in cockpit

Do not put a baby seal in your cockpit.
The mother seal leaves the pup on the beach so she can go hunting. The mother will come back and retrieve the pup later.
Leave the baby seal on the beach.

Re: Limit of Positive Stability (LPS)

Jack:
We are all learning here. Can't see a day coming when I won't learn something. I applaud you for diving head first into the deep subject of stability.

Re: full battens for a monohull cruiser?

It depends on the level of performance you are happy with. I do not subscribe to the idea that "this works for everyone".

I would never want a main without battens. I care about sail shape. But...

Re: Moving the mast on an I-28?

1" will make no difference in anything so long as the steel pad beneath it is still taking the load.

Re: Golden Gate 30

Not all NA's are as arrogant and cranky as I am. I think they like to be called and recognized for their contributions to the sport. I had no doubt that Chuck would be happy to talk to you.

Re: Golden Gate 30

If memory serves those are all Chuck Burns designs. Chuck worked for Gary Mull before going on his own. Chuck is a very good designer. Why don't you give him a call and ask him about the boats. He's...

Re: Low vs. high freeboard - benefits and drawbacks

No I won't take that into consideration. Too nebulous and can't be applied with any guaranteed consistancy. I'll just assume we are talking about boats loaded as most mom and pop boats are...

It doesn't matter what scale you use. You just need some "units".
They don't have to relate to any real scale. They have to relate to each other.

So,,,,you have a drawing of a boat. Take out...

Nope I would not design a IMOCA boat with or without chines. I'm comfy here in my beach shack and I don't need the money that badly. But the real reason I would not take that job for any...

Re: Interesting Sailboats

If you want to see a very successful narow boat with chines you should check out RAGTIME, a Spencer design. This boat is a downwind rocket and has been winning for about 35 years.

I'll leave it to...

Re: Closer to the wind question

I use 40% of luff length up from tack through the clew for my sheet location. I start there.

Re: What is this large bronze part?

That's what I am thinking too. That strap went down the stem inside the boat. Maybe glassed in place maybe through bolted. The other piece needs to be drilled for headstay and jib tack shackle.
