Ah... Wrongo. Raise the halyard as far as possible by hand hauling downward and jamb same with an upward pull in the cleat, "jamming" it in place. Grab halyard above cleat with tail in one's off...

Here is a link to John Harries solution to the problem on Morgan's Cloud. Basically a line on each side of the boom that is hooked near the gooseneck. Easy to use and no leaning over the side.

I ended up going with a 1 inch hose, 2 feet long. That way I can get it in the hole before I tip the can. The hose was tight enough on the nipple that I don't think I'll need a hose clamp...
