Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

By the way, what is the title of the book? Did I miss that somewhere?

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

You know... I kind of wondered the same thing, but I thought maybe there was something I don't know. ;)

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

I guess I will say that after posting this and the subsequent discussion about the subject, I will not let a tiller dissuade me from considering a boat once I am ready to buy. Before that would have...

Re: Islander 36 projects in paradise!!!!!

Just keep at it, man. You will get there. Check out Untie the Lines #1 - #40 on YouTube if you haven't already seen it. I have a total crush on this German woman who bought a boat in Panama last Fall...

Re: Islander 36 projects in paradise!!!!!

Bummer! So sorry to hear that. Is it too smashed to be able to still do a test sail when the other things are finished?

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Oh. Yeah. I forgot to mention all of that stuff. It is a "paradise" for those of us who aren't quite right in the head. Most people who aren't already here probably wouldn't like it. Cold, clammy......

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

Agreed. A cabin top traveler is firmly in the "no" column.

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

I am glad I started this thread, actually. It has given me some things to consider.

azguy, what is it do you think about a boat 35+ that makes a wheel better offshore?

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Salish Sea is a recent change within the last few years. It is more inclusive of the whole body of water as a connected waterway rather than separated by some arbitrary line drawn on a map.

Hey......

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

I know you posed this to Barefoot, but I am in the same location. If I may, paradise is the Salish Sea. Pacific Northwest from Puget Sound to Desolation Sound. It is a truly remarkable place. Up in...

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

A fair point and I considered this after I asked it. But I look around on yachtworld and cruise craigslist periodically to keep an eye on what's out there. I will hopefully be upgrading boats in the...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Yeah... I need some inspiration! I have been busy... working! Tried to go out on a perfect day this past Saturday with nice, steady winds out of the South. Not blowing too light or too hard....

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

Funny you should mention this... I actually have one for my boat that I haven't installed yet. I am going to see how I like it. I'm not sure about having another line in the cockpit to trip over...

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

This is my feeling also. Just flip on the wheel brake really quick, run and do whatever you need to do, and come right back. Much simpler and quicker than tying off a tiller. This is, of course, if...

Re: Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

I appreciate the responses. I think it mostly just comes down to what feels right. For me I think that means a wheel. I plan to head offshore and will do so on a boat that has an emergency tiller in...

Tiller or Wheel for Solo?

First, I am NOT wishing to open up a can of worms/debate about which is better... tiller or wheel. Opinions vary. I have been reading "Thoughts, Tips, Techniques and Tactics for Singlehanded...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Nope. Thanks for the update! Every year a friend of mine heads up the Inside Passage to Desolation Sound for a few months of summer. And every year there are countless things to do before departure....

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

I have missed this thread too! Any notable projects going on? I hauled out in April, painted the bottom, painted the deck and mast (still needs another coat), and didn't get to a tenth of the things...

Re: Islander 36 projects in paradise!!!!!

Somehow I think this boat has a whole lot more going for it than just a painted sole. ;)

Re: Islander 36 projects in paradise!!!!!

Bummer. In that case I think I would probably save it to the last. Then sand it out and paint the cabin sole. Mine is fiberglass with molded non-skid and looking pretty beat up and that is what I...

Islander 36 projects in paradise!!!!!

If you can get to the paint while it is still somewhat soft you might be able to get under it with a razor blade. Then wipe the spot with a product like goof off or something. The sooner you can get...

Re: Islander 36 projects in paradise!!!!!

Christian! WOW! I had noted your "1973 Islander 36 complete restoration under process!" signature from posts on the $500/mo thread, but I hadn't seen this thread. What a lot of work. Looking...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Can you get any kind of paint with a rust inhibitor in it? Here we have Rustoleum. If you sand the rust spots down to bare metal, prime the tanks with rust barrier primer, and then paint them with...

Re: Voyaging on $500 per month

Speaking of budget cruising... if you are thinking "my boat isn't big enough," or "it will be forever before I can afford a boat"... anybody hear of the crazy Russian who took off in a San Juan 24...
