Re: Solo Climbing the Mast- Block and Tackle

I now use the TopClimber (similar to ATN MastClimber) and am very pleased with it. You can see my review of it here (http://www.sailfarlivefree.com/2014/06/climbing-to-top-review-of-topclimber.html).

Re: Suggestions for 28-32 cruiser?

D\L is displacement to length ratio. Careful with generalizations, but a heavier boat per length of waterline might generally offer less performance. Though that may come with increased sea keeping...

Re: Sailing around the world on a Sunfish - non stop

Even though your plan is for a non-stop circumnavigation, will you bring an anchor? If so, which one and why?

Re: Catalina 34

So far I'm very happy with our MkI C34. Agree that storage can be an issue, though there's plenty if you don't need easy access (under the v-berth, behind the settee backs, etc.). Galley storage is...

Battery Wiring

I've finally got some time to go through our boat's system more closely and am trying to figure how our batteries are wired.

All three batteries are linked via the black/neg wires, but all...

Re: solar recommendations

I've got a rollable 14W panel from PowerFilm (http://www.powerfilmsolar.com/) that's durable and well-made. I believe they make rollable panels up to 60W.

Re: Catalina 275 sport

Here's what they (Catalina) were thinking:

"It reflects what many sailors have told us – they no longer need that big boat, but don’t want to give up racing or day sailing. They are spending fewer...

Re: Blue water boat for the Great Lakes?

square wave = short, choppy and steep waves with a short period. They seem to have "sharp" edges that pound a hull unlike the often more rounded swells on the ocean.

Re: Blue water boat for the Great Lakes?

Indeed, the weather on the Great Lakes can produce some rough conditions, but my experience has shown that more times than not (in the summer) you'll be trying to figure out how to deal with the...

Re: O'Day 35 vs Catalina 36

True enough, a C36 in good condition with a scoop will be a tough find for less than $40k. I believe there are a few MkI C36's with the scoop (maybe ~1990), but most are MkII's, which makes them...

Re: What do cruisers do?

Doing nothing is doing something.

Or you could...

...read a book
...write a book
...clean your boat
...fix your boat
...explore the shore on a hike
...take photographs

Re: Heavier better motion comfort ?

Weight/displacement is just one factor related to the motion of a sailboat. But don't take my word for it. Here's what Ted Brewer says about his "Comfort Ratio":

"This is a ratio that I dreamed...

Re: First boat advice - Mpls to Great Lakes

True enough, the NOAA radio forecast almost always states a chance of showers and thunderstorms. I'm less worried about thunderstorms and squalls then I am about heavy seas. You can reef, drop...

Re: First boat advice - Mpls to Great Lakes

In good condition, the Cat/O'day/Hunter would all serve your needs. I recommend making sure whatever you get has a very reliable outboard so that you can choose conservative (read low wind) weather...

Re: Best states for sailing and boating???

I'll add my home waters of Michigan to the list. We've got:
*Over 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline
*Over 11,000 inland lakes
*Over 35,000 Great Lakes islands
*Short sailing season! (That's...

Re: BoatUS membership worth it?

Well worth the ~$60 dollars or so here on the Great Lakes just for the unlimited towing. We've used it twice in the last 8 years and saved close to $4k in towing expenses.

Re: Keel Position & Forward Movement Question

You'll likely want your swing keel fully extended beneath the boat for any upwind work. Make sure you've got your sails sheeted in and your main's traveler and boom up to windward as far they'll go...

Great footage and video. Did you use a quadcopter for the aerial shots?

Edit - Nevermind, saw the DJi in the credits at the end.

Re: Sailing off to live on a deserted island

Palmyra is fascinating for social and ecological reasons. If you haven't read And the Sea Will Tell, I recommend it highly.

I'm convinced that islands still exist where you can escape from it...
