I actually thought that was not allowed for most insurance companies,

With your set-up now, yes...you would charge them at the same time...but they would both discharge at the same time as well....with the combiner, they would charge at the same time but not discharge...

If you must use that wire then maybe a goose neck with "monkey ****" packed around it.
