Re: replacing Bomar hatch in 1979 Seafarer 23

I found a hatch that was a half inch narrower in a salvage place. Then I reduced the size of the port by 1/4" on each side and got on with the program.

Re: sailing boca grande

Yes, I have found three sailing buds or belles there. One not so good, one pretty good, and one that I spent a couple months sailing with. Also post a sign at all the senior centers and athletic...

Re: sailing boca grande

John, I'd also try the personals in Ft. Myers, Punta Gorda, and Cape Coral. I have had fair luck there.

Re: Collecting Rain water

On the East coast US. rainwater is often not fit to drink. Acid rain and other pollutants are in most small thunderstorms. After a pretty good rain the atmosphere cleans up along with your sails. I...

Re: 1GM10 won't run over ~2500rpm

Rocketer, you are over propped, or have a plugged exaust. If a diesel smokes more than briefly it's being overloaded. This will either "tulip" the valves or put a hole in the piston sooner or...

Re: Need tips on moving a small wooden Catspaw Dinghy from R.I. to CA

Try U-Haul if you are driving. It would also fit in a full size van. Lots of ways to skin a small boat. A car trailer also would work. Depends a lot on what else has to go and the money availiable...

Re: Mast-attached winch problem

Most Auto Parts stores stock "Heli Coils". I'd investigate those first. If you have a suitable place for them they are better than new. For instance they are used extensivly in aluminum cylinder...

Re: fuel pump repairs

They are not taboo. The difficulties are largely the high degree of cleanliness required and since they fail pretty rarely parts aren't easily availiable.

In the last 50 years I have never had...

Re: 1977 ODAY Repowering options Questions

I have a Yamaha 8 hp out board. It is satisfactory and will push the 29 footer against about 25 knot winds (barely). To keep the prop in the water is the biggest trouble with this setup.

Re: Cleaning my Yanmar injectors?

Now you have them out I would prefer to take them to a diesel injection repair shop or read the test and spray proceedures from a shop manual. They are all more or less similar but a common problem...

Re: Single handed anchoring questions

Or cleat it on the bow but lead the rode outside the lifelines and shrouds back prior to anchoring, then lower it from the cockpit whilst on a reach or run and wait for it to set and swing you...

Re: oh oh water pump

Just a little note on antifreeze.

Some brands are "pre mixed". You can run these at 100%. Some brands are essentially pure ethylene glycol with some additives. DO NOT run these at more than...

Re: Why don't boats have headlights?

I set one up but the fog off the water made it worse than none at all. That was on the Calusahatchee River wanting to see daymarks into channel. Maybe a different color or polarizing would help but...

Re: The run aground poll

Last time I had the keel off I installed a "sled runner" on the bottom of it. That probably tells you enough!

Re: If you scuttle your boat, will insurance pay?

I only carried liability insurance. If you can't afford to lose your boat then it's irresponsible to expect somebody else to.

Re: 1gm10 low oil pressure after changing water pump

I'd bet on the oil pump inlet screen being clogged up.

Fryewe gave good advice

Re: Hatch lens replacement

I would try one of the headlight cleaning kits sold in auto parts stores for plastic headlights. They may do the job pretty well.

Re: kh18 shift fork

I have brazed up the wear pads on a couple of different forks. If its broken and brass (common) or broken and bronze you should be able to repair it.

Steel ones usually have plastic wear pads...

Re: Bounty captain Robin Walbridge's 'reckless decision' blamed for sinking

If it was a movie prop why was it off shore? Was the captain or company informed that it was just a movie prop and never was intended to be sailed.

Yes a lot of poor judgement was shown but...

Re: Bounty captain Robin Walbridge's 'reckless decision' blamed for sinking

Sorry, I would blame a lot of it on the builder.

Ships and boats are supposed to utilize wind and water. Short of hitting shallow water or failing to depower the sails there is a limit to what...

Re: Outguessing the Outboard

On my 7.5 hp Merc there is a warning not to let the wires touch each other. It'll take out the rectifier. The 6 amp alternator was on many smaller outboards. Kind of handy.

Re: sewing sunbrella

I found a White "Jeans Machine" in a thrift shop for $25.It has all the power that you'll ever need short of doing it professionally. No walking foot though, and it would be better with one.
