Re: Finally getting my start in Portland, Maine

Check out the crew match party at Handy Boat in Falmouth at the end of April. Some are looking for racing crew, others just for warm bodies to help out on a day sail.

Re: The run aground poll

I ran ours aground about 2 minutes after taking the helm for the first time. Repeated a few more times that first year. Soft mud thank goodness.

Re: Cetol Marine Finish Woes

Agree on the foam brushes. We usually finish with a coat of gloss. Seems to last longer.

Re: comissioning

Congrats on the commissioning. Still snow around the boat on the hard in Maine. I have been inside to do some seacock work and rebuilt the head (better now than in the summer), but no hope for...

Re: Good Radar book or course?

I'm not sure if you need a course. If you have a radar, turn it on when you can see things (don't need it) and you'll understand how it works more or less. Check with your local power squadron to see...

Re: Help friend sail in portland maine

There is a crew match in Points East Magazine.
There's also a crew match party at Handy Boat, May 1 if she's around.

Re: How much do you use your Chartplotter?

I keep it on all the time while sailing. Keeps a daily and running record of how fast, how far, and I find it's useful in conjunction with the depth finder as we get into the shallows. At anchor,...

Re: Considerations in Choosing a Marina

I would also consider mooring vs. slips. When we first got our boat, we had a slip. Learned a lot the hard way about maneuvering under power, but I was always anxious at the end of the day.

Re: Plastic or Aluminum for water tanks?

Thanks everyone. It sounds as if the consensus is against aluminum due to the pitting issues that can come from bleach sanitizing. Maybe I'll get pricing on steel vs plastic at this point. Sounds as...

Plastic or Aluminum for water tanks?

Hi all.

While putting an inspection hatch into my water tank, I got to inspect it and found it was severely pitted/corroded and close to breaking though. These are the original steel tanks and so...

Re: Booze, PFDs and Sailing with non-sailor friends

I agree with the no booze underway. I would like my guests as sober as possible if the worst happens and they need to be responsive and responsible, and as for me and the first mate, we do enough...

Re: Flexible holding tank location

Had a flexible holding tank when I bought the boat and it leaked around the gaskets for the input/output lines. Could never get it tight enough not to leak. Put in a plastic tank. Boatyard's comment...

Re: Interior wood treatment

We use diluted vinegar to clean then treat with Weimans lemon oil. If the wood is dry, you may need to go over it twice with the oil. Advantage is that it's a mild treatment and the next owner won't...

Re: When is your season over for the winter

Taking the last sail to the winter marina this weekend. The launch stops running after Columbus day. Have a list of things to do while on the hard, then back into the water in May.

In our log on the third sail ever is, "Great day, nothing bad happened."

Re: Running Speed vs Close-Hauled Speed

I've found broad reaches with just a main and jib to take a bit of playing around with the position of the main and jib. Having the main perpendicular to the boat will blanket the jib, which may...

Re: How much wind is too much for you?

Generally, we'll stay in with a forecast over 20 kts. 10 to 15 is great and over 25 is a lot of work. Can deal with the high end if caught out in it, but I'm not looking for it.

Re: Wacky Wind

True, and there was some of that and we expect that. It usually doesn't go from 8 kts to 20 kts though.

Re: Wacky Wind

Thanks all for your ideas. We've been in 25 kts steady and had a blast, but this was a different beast entirely. You've definitely given me some ideas to try the next time. It seems it comes down to...

Wacky Wind

Sailing in Casco Bay, Maine yesterday was a bit challenging. Going off the mooring, we saw the wind was at 17 kts, so decided to reef and put out only the staysail as the wind was supposed to kick...

Re: Ospreys

Nice work! I loved watching the eagles and osprey as we motored out the river in Maine last year. The osprey would like to sit on our mast when we were docked and occasionally we'd find fish heads on...

Re: moorings in Maine

There is also Handy Boat in Falmouth, just north of Portland. A bit exposed, but they have a launch and you have Casco Bay from great day sails. There is no problem getting a mooring there, but of...

Re: I love to learn the hard way!!!

Out on a Spring sail with friends who are experienced sailors. We knew(?) there was an unmarked ledge around, but unfortunately were chatting and not paying attention. Then, bump! Another boat buck...
