Re: Service life of a Sta-Lok fitting?

For 15 year old stainless with the intention of an offshore leg coming up, I would recommend replacing the fittings completely.

Re: Halyard Tension vs Turning Block Size

57mm will be fine. Remeber, the entire boat weighs 3k lbs. I might be using 40mm on mine. I'll try and remember to check this weekend.

Re: Team SCA, volvo ocean race

Some facts
-SCA is lacking experience in the VOR. They have individuals that have been around the world, but not in this type of fully crewed, full on all the time boats.
-their coach died...

Re: switching to WR2 for lifeline, reuse pelican hooks?

What thread size?
CS Johnson has what you need.
p/n 20-61 for 1/4" LH threads
p/n 20-63 for 5/16" LH threads

Or you can use an eye from Hayn
1/4-28 2-1/4" p/n 14LLERLH
5/16-24 2-1/4" p/n...

Re: Splicing different sized double briad

Yes, you can do a load bearing end to end splice. The one that is linked above is once for double braid polyester line. It won't work with high modulus line.

My suggestion would be the same as...

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

I'm running tapered sheets lead up to the cabin top winches.

Starting from the sail the sheet goes through:
- the twinger/tweaker which is lead to max beam on the boat at the toe rail.
- The...

Re: 1971 Cal 27(Jense mar) RIGGING

Looks like the magic boxes were an attempt at adding more purchase for a couple of those controls. Not the cleanest solution.

Re: 1971 Cal 27(Jense mar) RIGGING

A magic box is used to temporarily take the load off a line in use. Like you would use for a headsail change.

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

This is the same part that broke. Mine are stainless straps that fatigued with age and use. Easy fix but we had to retire from racing. Luckily it wasn't blowing very hard.

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

I have a 3350 MORC section. I looked at that tuning guide and I think it's a little high. In San Fran it's windy and I think that works fine, but on the bay you need a little more give. And I use a...

Re: Light air/Downwind sail choices

Most cruising sailors think a code 0 is a downwind sail when it is not. A true Code 0 has a usable range from about 60 true to 90* true. That's it. Above that you should be using a jib. Period.

A...

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

My mainsheet setup is the same as the factor 4:1 with a 2:1 traveler. No reason to change it for me. I did increase the backstay purchase to 24:1 and run it up to the traveler. Works great while...

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

Christian Hess, you are correct, the older boats are stronger than the newer ones. The photos on the Skedaddle site are a very good reference but the site does run slow. The reinforcements at the...

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

Hello, I'm also a Merit 25 sailor. Great boats. I've done a full bottom job, template the keel and rudder, long board, barrier coat, etc. I've also re-cored most of the deck, replaced the mast step,...

Re: Really, $1000.00 for foulies?

90% or more of sailors never need anything more than light weight pants or a jacket with a hood that is semi water repellant.

The only thing I think of that is $1k is either HL's offshore ocean...

Re: Materials for Soft Shackles

http://l-36.com/image/vel.jpg

Re: Cam or Clam Cleats, re: Jib sheets

+1 to Faster's comment above.

Also, to clear things up, the cam cleat, horn cleat, or self tailer should not have a large load on it. Ever. The load should be on the winch with enough wraps...

Re: Cam or Clam Cleats, re: Jib sheets

You don't want a fair lead on your cam cleat for jib sheets. Use a harken 150 cleat.

Re: Zipper along length of sail

1. Look around the sail.

2. the light air sail is probably meant to be flown on it's wire luff, like a code zero.
