i have a new 8 oz Dacron and it is quite stiff and difficult to flake on the boom. Also it is quite slippery and the flakes want to slide off of each other. May take a second look at lazy jacks.

my first guess is the damper plate. it connects to the flywheel and dampens vibration to the transmission. there may be a inspection port where you can see in there but still may be hard to see if...
