Re: iPad users only

I'm not in my 50s, but I use my iPad 1 for navigation too. Remember you need the 3G version (cell version) to have the GPS. I use and recommend BOTH iNavX and Garmin's BlueChart because I like...

Re: RYA yachtmaster vs USCG license Captain vs ICC

RockDawg,

Your stories about deliveries are awesome. Here's my two cents:
1. If you want to do international deliveries or get a Captain's job on a non US-flagged vessel, get the RYA Yacht...

Re: I fell out of my Boat (not mob)

I only use the ladder for me. I lower or raise everything to myself using bags tied to a single line (or a convenient handle on the item). I've had friends break their arms falling down ladders.

Re: Visitor

Your boat must be comfortable - after all, that's the best seal of approval I've ever seen!

Re: You are not welcome

The houseboats were lovely, but I got a feel that they were really little more than RVs on the water (in the sense of how they look and even how they're advertised). And personally, I very much like...

Re: Engine room cleanup - better way?

Once I'm done cleaning it, I'm planning to put down an epoxy barrier coat. I hear that's the best to help protect it.

I'm also installing a soundproofing heat shield on the bulkhead and...

Engine room cleanup - better way?

Zephyr is in the yard for some work, and I started working on the engine room since the engine is removed for a rebuild. I'm going to show you a nasty picture, so if you're easily nauseated, I...

Not sure if the OP is still looking for a place to start... Here's where I started: Chesapeake Bay Professional Captains Association. Google it and post a job, and you'll get a ton of responses. ...

Re: composting toilet-should we do it

I'm a believer - my wife and I installed one on our boat. My dad, brother and I went cruising over the spring for about three weeks total, no issues with it. (We use the Airhead composting toilet.)...

Re: South from Beaufort NC to Fla

There's the option to use the 12-NM slue from Frying Pan shoals vice heading further offshore if you want to stay closer to land. Well marked on the charts, two buoys on station. Pretty neat to see.

Re: Stove options

We have an Origo one-burner on our boat. The non-pressurized alcohol is relatively easy to find and it heats up FAST (much faster than we expected).

Re: Anyone use ships bells for time

We do it in the Navy. I like it.

I also enjoy when the ship I'm on uses pipes (the whistle sequence done by boatswain's mates).

Re: Things lost in the water

Not my loss, but my dad's - after he ran us aground in the St. John's River, he decided to jump in to push us off whilst my brother and I were wrestling with the stuck roller furling jib (when it...

I just did a similar trip this past year, also in April. We went ICW from Charleston (left nice and early from Patriot's Point around 0530) and up to Georgetown in one day. We enjoyed two days...

Re: Sailing from Little River Inlet, SC to Morehead City, NC

I think its useful to close up the thread with a quick after-action report, so here it is. We did the trip with no issues (besides my chronic sea sickness).

About a week before the trip I got...

Re: Sailing from Little River Inlet, SC to Morehead City, NC

We'd be starting the day at the Crickett Cove Marina, which is about as close to the inlet as you can get!

Re: Sailing from Little River Inlet, SC to Morehead City, NC

Thanks for the information - based on what you've told me, I'll probably go outside from Little River to Cape Fear, inside on ICW from Cape Fear to Masonboro, then outside Masonboro to Morehead City....

Not sure if anyone cares, but I figured that I'd at least follow up on the trip from Jacksonville, FL to (notionally) Morehead City, NC.

Prior to departing, I had hired a captain (Capt Mike...

First of all, I found a captain for my trip (not the Maine trip, but for my trip from Jacksonville to Beaufort). CAPCA was a great suggestion, thank you. All of the captains that I talked to (from...
