Re: I called Mercury Marine

Pretty much the same as what Sal does. I have had many outboards & motorcycles over the years. Draining the carbs & storing the motors upright, and using an additive has worked for me. With your...

Re: Adding Remote Control to Tohatsu 6hp

Ah, then life is good. We had a Coronado 25 that had a well which worked fine. However, the motor was buried down there making access to the controls difficult. If I was to do it over, I would have...

Re: Radiator Cap

I think overflow tanks came to be as automotive radiators began getting smaller & thinner, at least it seems that way on the many cars I have worked on. I guess the theory is that if the engine gets...

Re: Adding Remote Control to Tohatsu 6hp

Sounds like quite a project, nothing is easy. I have the same motor, how did it work?

Re: I called Mercury Marine

It takes a lot longer to remove, clean, & replace a carb than to drain it, which just takes a minute. :D

Re: cal 25 help

Too good to be true, or somebody else was quicker on the trigger, maybe it was "hot"? I would think a motor that size, in good running condition, would sell for at least $400.

I sold my 1964...

Re: Turn that frown upside down! Lets talk NEW engines!

I did an engine conversion on my Willys truck, replacing the old Continental flat head 6 with a Ford 302 V-8. ABSOLUTELY nothing fit & had to be re-fabricated. I would never do it again. I can't...

Curious to know what happened with the $100 10 HP?

Re: Radiator Cap

IIRC, the expansion tanks on most/all of the cars/trucks I have had are not sealed, but open to the atmosphere, with the radiator cap allowing coolant to flow back into the radiator as it cools, the...

Sounds like a helpful marina, surprised they waived the insurance thing.

Re: I called Mercury Marine

Sometimes, it is good to follow instructions I think it said "Drain"? :D

Also, they advise using a stabilizer. I have used this for many years in anything that burns gas, with no problems. In my...

Re: I called Mercury Marine

The only problem I have ever had was when I forgot to drain the carb for the winter, what a mess!!. However, your Mercury rep may have a point in keeping the carb full? If I haven't drained because I...

Re: cal 25 help

I am wondering why it is just $100? If the seller won't run it for you in a barrel, it either may not run or may not pump water? If you buy it sight unseen you may have just kissed $100 away?

Paul...

Re: cal 25 help

Depends on how much head wind & heavy chop you might encounter. We originally had a 6HP on our Coronado 25 in & out of San Francisco Bay waters, which can get pretty rough. We used to make long runs...

Re: cal 25 help

Ah, not a well, but better than a transom bracket. Looks like a long shaft would be best. However, for $100 for the motor, you could fit a 20" transom extender kit to the motor

omc 9.9 Shaft...

Re: Glow plugs have no fuse

VW diesels I had used a solenoid with a time out device. IIRC, a long time ago, they were fused, at least 50 amps, in the main fuse panel, I think? If powered through a solenoid the fuse could/should...

Re: Won't Start after 4 hours of cruising.

"Probably flooded"? Unless it is blowing a lot of black smoke on re-start, probably not.

"Chug, chug" means "slow"? Slow turnover probably caused by battery/connections/starter/solenoid problems?...

Re: Outboard motor for Catalina 22

Get the 6HP, same size & weight as the 4 & 5 . I have a 6HP 4 stroke Tohatsu, 2 years, runs perfectly. Long shaft ids good & necessary when/if it gets rough. Does it get rough in Florida?:D

Re: Honda 4 stroke 2.3 hp

You are welcome. I bought mine new in 1985, ran it hard in fresh & salt water for over 25 years. It ran as good as new when I sold it. If I still had it I know it would have outlasted me. Like all...

Re: Honda 4 stroke 2.3 hp

If you want to be really nice to it, change the oil. Then, thoroughly drain the carburetor & tank. Then make sure all the water has drained out of the exhaust system if so equipped. My 1985 2HP Honda...

Re: Won't Start after 4 hours of cruising.

"Rolled over"? Meaning turning over very slowly? If the engine was warm, it should spin over rather quickly, assuming the battery is good? Maybe bad terminal connections?

Maybe check battery with...

Re: cal 25 help

We had a Coronado 25 on San Francisco Bay for many years. Started with a 6HP outboard which was adequate in calm conditions, & soon went to a 15HP which was the same size & weight as the 9.9HP. The...

Re: Engine Size

Looks like you may be on a lake? Depends on how much headwind & chop you may encounter? The 4HP should work in all but heavy wind & chop conditions?

Just put it on & see what happens.

Re: Westerbeke voltage/lift pump issue.

Possible bad connections/wire? You can remove the wire & test with an ohm meter, or just replace it with all new wire & connectors. If you jumped the existing wire & it works, that is likely the...
