Re: behavior on other's boats

I like toastchee's advice. The whole point is to have fun - for all aboard. Good communication is key.

Re: backing into a slip with single screw

In order to make getting abord easier for my wife, I've recently switched to bringing the boat into the slip stern first. Cap'n Max did a great job of explaining. Also several of you noted that it...

Re: what to check for before boat delivery?

Great advice. I'll add one thing: Check the weather. Lots of ways to do that, including a weather router (a person who checks it for you). Above all, don't be tied to your schedule. If the...

Re: Forwar - Neutral - Reverse when sailing??

Yes, check your manuel. I have the Yanmar3JHAE so I leave it in neutral, as per Yanmar instructions. Certain Universals with Hearth transmissions leave them in reverse. Check your manuel - or call...

Re: Should you expect to haul out a boat that is in the water when shopping?

On a boat this size, the engine is the most expensive piece of gear. Really, find one that the engine works and the boat shows good maintenance. You'll be glad you did.

Re: Take Your Shoes Off in the Cabin

Here's a (true) story:

I invited my old friend to spend the night on the boat. He asked if the wife could come so I said sure. They show up and have their little dog with them. Uhhh…. She...

Re: Rusting lifeline - what to do?

Replace.

I went with the uncoated stainless. I think it should last longer. Dynema has an issue with chafe. I based this decision on my own intuition. I would love to hear of any data or...

Re: Smackdaddy needs your thoughts/prayers

Steve, Best wishes to you and your boys. I know that the best way to honor a loved one is to live the life as they would wish for you. Sounds like your adventure is such a thing.

Re: Being a good guest/crew member

Ask the Skipper what He/She needs, or wants you to bring. Bring your gear in soft canvas bags (no suitcases). Smile a lot and give people space when they need it. Help with all the work.

Re: Has anybody towed kayaks behind....

Kayaks are really light. Put them on your bow, or side deck. Play around a bit to find the position where they don't interfere with your jib sheets, tie them down, and then go from there. Many...

Re: Sugar scoop transom safety in big seas

Two points to consider:

The amound of freeboard gained by a full transom vs. a sugar scoop is measured by a few feet at most (often less). In large seas, that is pretty much nothing. A large sea...

Does the rudder fall off of production rafts?

Re: This is for everyone who gave the Flyin' Hawaiian a hard time....

I read with interest, the Antiki story. Lots of research, models and a well executed plan for an unusual adventure. Yes, rafts are crazy, but it's one form of voyaging. I compare that to other...

Re: Docking under Sail - Beam reach approach

It's really common for a 24' sailboat to dock without a motor. Practice, Practice, Practice. Have fun.

Re: Spreading ashes?

Interesting. So I spent some time on the internet. California State regulations require being beyond 500 yards from shore. EPA regulations require being at least 3miles from shore. If I remember...

Re: Spreading ashes?

In California spreading ashes at sea has to be at least 500 yards from shore. Look up your requirements. Crematoriums offer a salt based urn. Throw the whole thing in the water. It dissolves. If...

Re: Buy this deal, or pass?

Capta, would that be a 10' radar pole? :D

By the way, I have a complete Raymarine system with plotter, auto pilot, wind, speed, and depth. It is a C series. They are all integrated and work...

Re: Windows in canvas?

We have a Bimini and a connector. The Bimini has no windows. Even without the connector piece I never had a problem looking forward and up to see the main. The connector has one very large window....

Re: Greatest fear?

My biggest fear is that someone on board will get seriously hurt. Especially if it is by some error on my part. Being Skipper on a boat is a big responsibility.

Re: boats with the most head room

There are lots of boats that have ample headroom. What kind of boat do you like? I don't mean to not answer your question, but there are so many other criteria that may be more limiting. Examples:...

Re: Do you think I'm going to blow myself up

Why would you store gas in an unvented area? It is really easy to build a storage tank, complete with vent. Build it into the lazaretto.
