Re: Best outboard motor for a small inflatable?

I have a 2-stroke Yamaha 2hp on my 7'6" Achilles. It also is only good for 3 people. I find the engine a good match to the boat and love the light weight (about 22 lbs). If you can find a good one...

Re: Zippered Pocket on Foot of Main Sail??

My new-to-me Cal 33 came with a Dutchman System. Really love it. When I replaced my main last year, I had the system put on the new sail. Basically all you need is a new or modified topping lift...

Re: Mooring Line

I agree with paulk. It's not tensile strength that's important in selecting the size.

Most pennants fail due to chafe. A larger pennant is less prone to chafe. Get the largest that will fit...

Re: New Prop for Catalina 30

Sounds small. IIRC, the prop on the Universal 5411 I had on my previous boat was a 14D 12P Martec folder. Pushed the Cal 9.2 to almost 6 knots. But the Cat 30 was designed initially for the Atomic...

Re: Safe paint removal?

There are a few strippers sold by the marine paint companies that will not harm gelcoat, but they are pricey. I've used Citristrip which is available at Home Depot and many hardware stores and it...

Re: old yanmar 12HP water pump additional inlet and outlet lines

Its common on larger powerboats to have the ability to use the engine pumps as emergency bilge pumps. Perhaps the PO picked up on that and connected his engine raw water pump up that way.

Re: What to know about a raw water cooled Universal

With regard to the pump, just look for leakage out the weep hole between the two seals. If its not leaking you are fine. Universal replaced the original pump with a new one a number of years ago. ...

Re: Universal Oil filter

Since it's fresh water cooled, it is most likely a 5416. The 5411 was raw water cooled. Check the dipstick as it will have the Kubota engine number. The 5411 was Z-500. The filter I used for the...

Re: tiller / rudder to stiff? wy

Rudder bushings on the P26 are very easy to change. Did it several times when I owned one. Basically just a cylinder with a raised lip on the end. As long as the previous owner didn't put...

Re: picking a new motor for the job!

Yes a 20 inch longshaft will work, but expect the prop to be out of the water A LOT if you get into some good sized waves and the boat starts pitching. I had my P26 in some bad weather over the 10...

Re: picking a new motor for the job!

I had a Pearson 26 back in the 80s and had the same model Johnson 8 Sailmaster bblument has now. It replaced a 9.9 Mercury longshaft that got stolen. The Johnson Sailmaster has a 25 inch shaft...

Re: Looking For A Prop

You have a Martec Elliptec. It's a good prop. You definitely should consider having it rebuilt. Martec does this all the time and does a great job for a reasonable price. Here's the link to info...

Re: Pencil Zinc location for Yanmar 2GM

My 3GM30F has no zincs due to the heat exchanger material (Cu-Ni). I suspect your engine is the same.

Re: Removing Mast on Rhodes 19 keel boat

Its not so much the weight (which isn't that much) but maintaining control as you lower it and loose leverage as it approaches horizontal. Two guys can do it easily. I once had an Oday 22 and would...

Re: Genoa measuring, help please.

You really should look at the headsail area. You can calculate the area using Luff x LP/2 = Area. If they give you luff, leach and foot, you'll have to do a some geometry/trig calcs to get there. ...

Re: To do it myself or not ?

The biggest piece of that job is dropping the rudder. If you can deal with that, I would say do it yourself. I've done that several times on boats up to 30 foot with a tiller. Bigger job on larger...

Re: Winter Stick

I use a separate light chain (1/4 or 5/16) shackled to the upper chain. Thus the upper chain lies in the mud all winter. I know it sounds like a lot of money for a "chuck of plastic" but if you see...

Re: Question regarding 2qm15 mixing elbow part numbers

Yanmar seems to have multiple part numbers for their U-type exhaust elbows. I replaced mine this spring on my 3GM30F. Toughest part was getting everything apart. Local Yanmar dealer just needed...

Re: Replacement Sail Dimensions

[Looks like the main may fit, but the foot is a bit long and will be past the black line. You may not be able to tighten the outhaul.

The genny has less luff, so you may have a halyard wrap...

Are you going to do this yourself or have a yard do the repairs? If the later, you are looking a big bill.

Re: M25 what is this and where does the hose go?

The area you have circled is on the the valve cover. Not sure what that little unit is however. Maybe a crankcase breather? If so, they are commonly connected to the air inlet to burn the vapors...

Re: Bottom paint tricks

I use two different sizes of masking tape. First 1/2 inch at the line because it follows the curves much easier. Then a 2 or 3 inch on top to allow me to be less careful with the roller and not...
