Check your alternator. Don't see how that should keep a diesel from running,
but that is all that i can see this damaging. Does the system have an electric engine shut of switch?

Most transmissions take 10w 40 or heavier. If i remember correctly some of the old construction equipment took 90W. Gear oil is not ATF. Check the manuel or manufacturer.

close call. ATF eats normal seals. 5 wt oil is possible substitute. If it calls for ATF
give it ATF.

Tranny oil doesn't go away suddenly (usually). That leaves the linkage, cables, or the lever on the outside of tranny. If it isn't there it is inside. If it was easy to remove the tranny fixing it...
