Re: Replacing Tired Old Portlights

I have this winter to think about how to mount them without screws. Perhaps a couple of routed out plywood "clamps" that could be masked and removed after the cure. How thick should the bead of...

Re: Replacing Tired Old Portlights

All good and thanks. I enjoy the luxury of a hull surface I can fasten a jig or two, to if I desire. It will be getting a face lift too. Yes, SelectPlastics provided lites covered with masking...

Replacing Tired Old Portlights

I have purchased new, replacement, portlites for my 1975 Islander 28. I will install them in the spring. Stbd and port side bevels are machined. No holes drilled yet. The provider assures me that...

I-28 cockpit drain hull locations? Help?

I am considering moving the hull locations of my I-28s cockpit drains. Anything I should consider not obvious to me?

Obvious list: above waterline, lower than cockpit sole, aft of cockpit...

Re: Islander 28 cockpit drain freezing issue?

Really? I do cover the boat. Thanks. I am hoping someone has a specific idea about the question I am raising. There are yards that won't store a boat with a cover without a garboard plug. ...

Islander 28 cockpit drain freezing issue?

Freezing of the cockpit drain hoses is a problem during winter storage. The routing required to get past the rudder post and across to the opposite side of the hull requires "dips" in the drain hose...

Re: Islander 28 handrail fastener leaks!

It is a well built boat. I do not know its history. Its original name was "Hurah". It sailed out of Boston. It was raced and spent several years on the hard, prior to our acquiring it. It was...

Re: Islander 28 handrail fastener leaks!

All of the above. The fact that the same 3/8" machine screws, fastening the deck track, were snapped off tells me that that was the solution for those fasteners. The leakage problem goes way, way...

Islander 28 handrail fastener leaks!

I have "gotten to the bottom" of a problem that has plagued our Islander 28 from its very beginning. We were aware of it from the start of our ownership. The time came to remove the aging...

Re: I-28 Vinyl Headliner Replacement

Today I removed the headliner from my 1977, I-28! So it begins. Condensation problems and some leaks have been obvious for a long time. Removing the liner revealed new curiosities about this boat....

Re: Sailor missing 66 days found! Breaking News.

Show me the Bible he read over and over after being submerged several times. I Own a few copies of The Good Book and have never seen one, even in a drawer in a motel, that could survive that. I...

Re: Half hull models of your boat?

Cut the wl pieces and stack them. Fair to the glue joints. Voilla! I always cut duplicates of each wl layer since I have bothered to create its pattern.

Have fun.

Re: Half hull models of your boat?

I carve / build scale models of my boats. It is easy to do if you can scale the wls from a lines plan to the dimension of your lumber. A good business copier that can change dimensions is magic....

Re: Father and son sailing

Consider something like the Marshal Marine Sandpiper, cat boat. 15' long with a hinged mast and a huge sail. A floating patio! Room for 4 adults and lunch. Very safe and fun. Fast, too with the...

Re: Melting Glaciers Lead to the Freak Phenomenon Of "Dead Water"

Seems like the bow wave is an important part of this "equation" when depth is considered. Shallow depths (less than 30') result in "rebound" resistance to a hull from the wave being bounced back. ...

Re: FWC kit for Atomic 4, a good idea?

When I re powered with an exchange from Moyer 5 years ago I included the fw cooling option from Indeglo. I am glad I have it. Installation took some "cleverness". I run a little cool here along...

I think an iPad is in the offing. I am a fan of Apple hardware, too. If the kids are going to buy one I will have both!

We spend a lot of time on the water. Some of it paddling a canoe for...
