Re: VHF DSC Handheld with AIS?

Hmm. Wrong citation. However there is a requirement elsewhere in §164.46 for use at anchor only for vessels for which carriage is required. See AIS Requirements...

re: Boom Vang and Preventers (renamed)

I have a bail at the end of my boom specifically for the preventer. If your boom isn't so fitted adding one is pretty straightforward.

Offshore I run the preventer (when not being used) over...

Re: Propeller 101?

SAE tapers are 1:16 and 1:12 (generally smaller shafts use 1:16 and larger ones above 3" or so are 1:12). Metric tapers are 1:10 and 1:20.

Re: Let's see your electronics! (for science)

Read the resources first and then ask the questions. You'll get much better responses and from more the perspective of more experience if you ask better questions. You are asking poor questions - at...

Re: Let's see your electronics! (for science)

Unless you are talking about music this is indeed the second step.

The first step is to gather together a description of your desired life style. You may find that there are internal conflicts.

Re: Dinghy theft protection

I have replaced the screws on my outboard with security bolts (the hex heads with studs in the middle). That means using a driver to get the engine on and off the dinghy but really not a big deal. I...

Re: Pactor Modem

There are good reasons why HF/SSB is part of GMDSS and satellite phones are not. Iridium and Globalstar keep applying and keep getting turned down.
Do share why.
Re: Hard time finding crew opportunities

Right - Marine electronics are a rats nest of incompatibilities. "Skilled operator" and "marine electronic technician" are different. Unfortunately when electronics fail the stress level aboard goes...

Re: Looking for Crew/Partner

Hola,

You asked for feedback in the crew/captain thread. I hope you will forgive me for choosing to post a response here.

First, I did an owner aboard delivery for a gentleman that had a...

Re: Head dumps directly into sea?

There are at least three categories of approach here: science, law, and politics. They are only mildly interrelated.

The problem is that the public doesn't understand what "real science" is....

Re: How did you get your spouse to embrace the cruising life?

Hi Chuck.

I'd like to be clear about something - getting good speed out of a boat doesn't mean putting the rail in the water. In most cases on almost every boat putting the rail in the water slows...

Re: How did you get your spouse to embrace the cruising life?

What passagemaking are you doing on a Grampian 26? What are you wife's lifestyle expectations?

My suggestions are:

- Sit down with your wife and tell her (if these are true) that you are...

Re: Production Boats and the Limits

I've only sailed one Garcia, on delivery from Newport to Annapolis. There were some oddities, some driven by the owner, but they are very solid boats that I would not hesitate to take anywhere. Look...

Re: Coastal cruising equipment and accessories

There are lots of decent shortwave receivers. I use a Kaito KA-1103 but it is far from the only choice. When I bought mine I read reviews on eHam and price shopped.

Re: Pactor Modem

Hello Mark.

Pactor 4 is perfectly legal on the marine bands worldwide. All the Sailmail stations support Pactor 4.

Pactor 4 is not legal in the US on the ham bands. It is legal pretty much...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

I can't speak for others, but for my part you can fly any stupid or lame thing you want. The question was "is it lame?" The answer is yes. If you want to defend your right to fly it I don't think...

Re: Single-handed tips and tricks

I can't agree. Lines led aft increase the chances of a failure which means you are more likely to have to go forward to fix something when conditions are unpleasant. The more boats I sea with lines...

Re: Help me teach my wife navigation

Spacial geometry and associated trigonometry isn't messy at all. It is beautiful and enriching. Where do you think the celestial tables come from?
