Re: Why do people still use depth sounders?

I'll give you one reason: dirty hipsters.

Re: Why do people still use depth sounders?

He's too busy cutting the fingers off all his gloves and being a sexy hipster to run aground. Have you seen his avatar? It's like the GQ sailing magazine cover for September. They're making a...

Re: Boat brands to stick with for ocean rough seas?

Whoa, hey now. That's pure plagiarism. I want another thanks. Actually I want more rep for having to suffer.

Do you have a new avatar Christian? It's nice.

Re: Boat brands to stick with for ocean rough seas?

I myself am in the market for a heavy duty but small, offshore capable cruiser. If I had the money certain new jeanneaus and beneteaus would maybe, maybe be considered. Your best bet, is one of...

Re: Why do people still use depth sounders?

Eh, I just don't like those dirty hipsters thinking they're better than me because they use a lead line and row their dinghies. They make a hawk eye handheld electronic depth sounder for under a...

Re: Why do people still use depth sounders?

I would ask:

"when you can get a depth sounder for $100-200, what is the point of having a lead line?"

To make yourself feel like a cool old timer? They're for traditionalist hipsters. I...

Re: In what order are parts of the boat most important?

That's a great answer. I can't disagree with anything.

I too like to customize electronics and running rigging. Like I said above, you can do one thing at a time, if you like, and spread the...

Re: Boat brands to stick with for ocean rough seas?

Those seem more like middle weight boats, more so than pure globe rounders.

Foredeck on 25

I was going to go look at a PS 25 this week, but I have this dinghy I don't want to get rid of. It's a 9 foot rigid bottom inflatable that stows in a bag just under 4 feet by 7 feet.

I have only...

Re: In what order are parts of the boat most important?

Good thoughts, appreciated as always.

Chainplates go in the standing rigging category. The deck goes in category 1. It's part of the hull. That's what I meant by rot. Deck rot. The deck to hull...

In what order are parts of the boat most important?

A bit of awkward wording, but I'm in the market, I make calls and ask questions. What do you guys think are the most important things to look for when buying a used sailboat? My order is something...

Re: how many times a month do you eat out

Does eating out mean a sit down restaurant, prepared food to go, prepared food from a grocery store?

Sit down: 0-1
To go from restaurant: 3-5
From grocery store: 30-60

Estimated cost sped on...

Re: Help me figure out what kind of boat I want.

I'm quiet because I'm taking the weekend to reflect upon a balance between what I think I want to do(sail to Mexico and te South Pacific) and what I think I will do.

This boat looks great for...

Re: Ever had a MEDICAL EMERGENCY while at SEA?

Whoa. Miatapaul is injecting drugs at dead concerts. No smoking pot for him, he's straight to the needle. He's probably killed people too.

I see a point to this thread though, learning what to...

What Falmouth cutter is that, Merico? I wish I had enough for the FC for sale down there.

Well....I suppose I haven't pulled the trigger yet, I may have jumped the gun. But really what I meant...

Re: Curse my impulsivity, I'm buying a boat! Taipan 28

See, I listen I listen. I'll stop cherry picking and go with the overall consensus on here that I need to look first. It's embarrassing, but it IS why I asked, and I think most everyone agrees,...

Re: Curse my impulsivity, I'm buying a boat! Taipan 28

So you're saying the teak strengthens the deck, and it's an ultra deck?

....Don't tell me I don't listen lol, I'm starting to agree. I should probably go see it first. Dammit, I was trying to be...

Re: Curse my impulsivity, I'm buying a boat! Taipan 28

In 2012 they replaced it with a used yanmar. The only info I have on that is from the previous owner and the surveyor. It has no hours and no temperature gauge.

I told the broker that it was...

If anybody read that, is that a good survey? It has since been hauled out, repainted, blisters fixed and the prop shaft fixed.

Re: Worse than a garage... I may need help

Totally agree with the above. I throw it all away. If I replace a shackle, the old shackle gets tossed. My method for keeping things clean is just to throw everything away.
