Re: Blocked Raw Water Intake

I sail in the Raritan Bay/Atlantic Ocean area. I've had external scoop strainers on the intakes of both boats I've owned. Believe me, sailing through those waters after heavy rains with all the...

Re: D'oh! Dropped something into the cylinder..

Before you use the vacuum cleaner, stretch some old panty hose over the nozzle and secure it with a rubber band. That will allow you to see that you got the object out.

Re: An Apology

It takes a real man to admit one's wrong doing. However, adding an explanation opens an insight into where that man has been and where he is coming from. A lot of these posts would be so much better...

Re: Lesson from Sandy

In the past, I have always kept my boat at my mooring during any named storms. I believe it to be safer as the boat points into the weather. I do all the usual storm preps, remove all canvas, anchor,...

Re: roller plotter or parallel rulers?

They are both very good tools for plotting a course on your chart. The parallel roller is better in close quarters use that you find at your boat's nav station. The sliding parallel ruler is better...

Re: Volvo penta 2002

The problem sounds like it is in the fuel injection system. The first thing I would suggest looking at would be the fuel injectors.

Re: Yanmar 2GMF problems

A clogged exhaust mixing elbow would would also hinder acceleration. Other things to consider would be a clogged filter, water in the fuel and/or a worn fuel pump plunger.
Good luck and hope it's...

Re: Yanmar 2GMF problems

Really sounds like a barnacle fouled prop. That is the first thing to check.

Re: Mystery wire!

I noticed the same for my Yanmar 2GM20 a few years back. After reading the service manual, I learned it's an unused wire for the 2GM20 and 3GM30. It makes note that the use for that blue wire would...

Re: Watkins 27 Second First Boat

The Watkins is a well built boat. They're not built for racing but will give you alot of comforts for their size as compared to similar sized vessels. The boat is definitely worth considering if the...

Re: New here, looking to learn

Hi and welcome to SN. As for learning on the cheap, you should also check out any area sailing/yacht clubs for racers looking for crew/rail meat for their weekly races. There are alot of sailors and...

Re: Need one hand willing to work for travel from Northeast to Southwest

This sounds like a great adventure. However, if I read it right, the boat is a 1977 Newport 28. Do you really know what kind of shape she is in? Before setting sail, you need to do a thorough check...

Re: question regarding electric head vs manual

I installed an electric head in my boat 6 years ago. It is very female friendly and with the built in macerator and 1 1/2" discharge, I have not had any problems of clogging or blockages. I puchased...

Re: Asymmetrical Spinnaker Cost?

Last week I stooped by my local sail loft and asked the same question for a 29' boat. After talking about everything I needed for an asym, I got a budget price of under $2000 for a complete set up.

Re: Could You Survive a Collision

Usually don't try to hit the dock, normally come up to it easily and then tie up.

Re: State Sen. Kehoe drops anti fouling paint bill

+1 for common sense

Nice to hear a politician actually wants all the information prior to pushing through legislation that will have a very large impact on the marine community.

Re: Galvanic corrosion - sail slides

I would not use S/S slides on my aluminum mast. My fear would be the metal to metal contact. Stainless is a harder metal than aluminum and the possibility of the stainless steel wearing away any of...

Re: Overboard discharge design

For offshore discharge, I would highly recommend the installation of a macerator pump to help prevent some of the clogging issues. Also, the macerator would help minimize the size of particulate...
