YSB8 with James Bond Feature

My 900 year old (actually a 1977) YSB8 has taken to laying down quite the stinky, white smokescreen on the water and frequently putting out black soot as well. The engine has been regularly serviced...

Exhaust Temperature

Does anyone know what temperature the exhaust gas might reach on a raw water cooled marine diesel (a 1977 Yanmar YSB8) and/or how hot the exhaust elbow will get? I know that raw water engines seem to...

Muriatic Acid: A cautionary tale about cleaning mixing elbows, etc.

The quick summary: Muriatic acid seems to be a bad idea to clean metal, but phosphoric acid might have potential.

I recently used 5% muriatic acid to clean the soot build-up out of my exhaust and...

In WA state where my boat is moored, I pay ~$50/hour for a private mechanic who does mechanical, electrical and plumbing. I think the local yard charges $70+ for the same work.

Treating Engine Bolts

Hi All,

Has anyone tried using Pipe Joint Compound (specs below) on bolts into the engine (e.g., to attach the exhaust elbow) to enable easy removal later on. Someone mentioned this to me as an...

Clogged Exhaust or Mixing Elbow: Clean or Replace?

The topic of soot build-up in the exhaust elbow and/or mixing elbow has been mentioned several times, but I wondered what the general wisdom was about cleaning vs. replacement. Can these items be...

Are troublelights an option?

Well, I used a Caframo (looks very similar to the Westmarine unit) heater set to the antifreeze setting last year, but now Sailingdog has me concerned about the potential fire hazard ... which would...

Diesel sitting in tank for years

We had our 12 gallon tank for a Yanmar YSB8 replaced 16 months ago. The new tank was supposed to be around the same size but turned out to be 19 gallons. I topped up the tank to within 2-3 inches...

Thank you for all of the input.

We managed to get back down to the boat and alas the problem has had the nerve not to self-correct (and since the boat next door was no longer plugged in we'll...

Shorepower and Reverse Polarity

Perhaps someone can enlighten us about reverse polarity. Don Casey's tip (copied below) is clear enough, but still fails to explain our 'current' situation.

Earlier today we went for the first...

The engine starts immediately so the compression seems good. Also, I have added 1L of oil to get to the midpoint on the dipstick so there is no more warning light.

I don't have a temp guage...

I forgot to mention that I also replaced the muffler and exhaust line recently. That didn't stop the black smoke but the new fuel tank, filter and fuel did stop it. Now I just get white smoke --...
